Best duck dog
« on: November 16, 2008, 04:59:00 PM »
I want to get serious about duck hunting. I finally have a place with alot of room that I can raise and train a dog. I need a multipurpose dog that is very good with kids(I have 3 little ones) and also is a good watch dog since my wife is a little paranoid. I now have some time to train one and I love hunting. I was kind of leaning towards a lab but I'm not sure. Any thoughts Wapato.

Your situation sounds a lot like mine.  I am getting a chocolate lab next spring!  They are a great dog for all of the situations you want.  (any lab for that matter)

I know there is another thread about this recently here, but I'm partial to yellow labs. Nothing against chocolates though... ;)

I prefer my yellow Lab.... Bubba is great with kids and an awesome bird dog.  Nothing wrong with Choc's either... spend the extra bucks and get some training for both you and the dog!

a dog is just an extension of its owner.  Any color of lab will do, as long as its black  :P

Any of the big 3 retriever breeds (Lab/Ches/Golden) will be suitable.  Try to get some exposure to each (in general and in hunting scenarios if possible) and just get a feel for what your preference is.  Each breed has some general traits that you may or may not like.  Also, try to pick the one that suites your personality and life style... don't just think about it as a hunting dog.  Assuming your choice comes from decent hunting lines, and you spend the proper time training it's more than likely the dog will do everything you want/need regardless of which 1 of those 3 you get.

Go for the chocolate!  You might want to check out Tiger Mountain Pointing Labs if you wanna do some upland aswell.
