Think YOUR game and fish dept. is dumb?
« on: March 08, 2014, 12:00:13 PM »
If you think WDFW is the undisputed king of silliness, think again. Arizona Game & Fish spent God knows how much money to transport a herd of 30 bighorn sheep across the state to release them into a new habitat. In just three embarrassing months, half of them have become mountain lion snacks. I'm no wildlife biologist, but isn't a part of habitat survey studying the predator population? Seems to me that a little common sense would dictate thinning the predators in order for a released population to thrive. Way to flush away our license revenue!  :bash:

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/03/08/deaths-bighorn-sheep-draws-criticism-relocation-project/?intcmp=latestnews

State wildlife officials say the deaths of more than a dozen bighorn sheep relocated to the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson does not mean the project is a failure.

Some animal welfare advocates are divided over the transplanting last November of 31 bighorns from the Yuma area to the Catalinas.....

Only realistic explanation is we are going to have some fat healthy predators to hunt in the near future :dunno: but I would rather eat mutton than a wolf or puma steak :twocents:

The more money they take from us the dumber they seem to get :dunno:Bio's these days do seem to have a major degree in ass backwards stupidity that is for sure :(

One of the principles of wildlife management is that when you move animals to where they don't currently exist naturally, there will be unintended circumstances.

"I'm no wildlife biologist, but isn't a part of habitat survey studying the predator population?"

Most "wildlife biologist" don't believe in "predator control",  they, predators are looked at as just "balancing out" nature, naturally!!

Been there done that!  You should have heard the "scalded cat" response at the public meetings over the listing of the Salmon years ago!!  When the "biologist" were confronted about "predation" by "nature" of the Salmon smolt's!!

But that didn't fit their "agenda" against water users, aka Farmers!!!  and of course the EVIL loggers!!

When i was in Kansas i hear many people sing the praises of thier department... Aside from they wish they had gotten thier permits faster, or other such stuff... I hope to go back and whack one of the big ones i saw while there!

I think most of the drivel about G&F depts is spewn on internet forums by residents of that state. They get frustrated for not drawing a Blues branch bull September rifle permit every year so G&F becomes a pressure valve for their frustration.

I actually don't have much of a problem with my game department. For the most part I think they do a good job, and I feel the same way about New Mexico G&F as well. WDFW is another story. This in fact IS a huge embarrassment to AZG&F and needs to be called out, not so much to get anyone fired or publicly humiliated as much as that they need to listen to hunters more than predator lovers and do more homework first next time.

I think AZG&F does a pretty good job too, but they have it easy because they got over the 100% draw requirement (other than OTC archery deer) a long while back and their constituents have just come to understand that they won't get to hunt their own state every year.  Once you get to that step, a lot of things become WAY easier because now people have to choose if they want to hunt or want to hold out for the primo tags, because you can't do both.  That makes the odds for the primo tags significantly better.

There are still some things about AZ that people would whine about here for sure:

Imagine if you had to draw every elk, deer, bear, even turkey tag.  They do.

OIL odds in AZ are just as bad as here.  Heck, even speed goats have max points well above 20.

Up until last year, you could only submit paper applications in AZ because they cut Internet applications after consecutive draw debacles.  Sound familiar?

Fees are going way up.  Resident bonus point for all species in 2013 = $7.50, after you buy your $32 license.  Resident bonus point for all species in 2014 = $13, after you buy your $37 license.

A resident (yes, resident) elk tag just went from $121 to $148.  Imagine what people would say here if our resident elk tags were $148!!!  Turkey (turkey!) just went from $25 to $38.

These are just some examples.  It's not all peaches and cream anywhere.

Take a look at Utah's big game pamphlet (book) - they have over 100 CWMU  deer units alone  (wait till that really kicks in here and see how much "open to hunting" property you loose)  As someone said, every state has their haters, almost have to submit the regs. to your lawyer now to get them interpreted and advance financing from your bank to make sure you can pay if you draw out.  It just is what it is.

$148 for an elk tag that you get once every 4 to 8 years, if you're willing to hunt archery or late rifle. More like 12-15 if you want a rifle rut tag. I'm still waiting for my first  :(  Habitat loss, high quality and high tech hunting equipment, and distaste for widespread predator removal seem to be pervasive throughout the west. This of course leading to shrinking tag numbers and higher fees. I can't say how glad I am to be out of WA though. God help you people. Good riddance  :hello:
