Bullet choice

When we are not building wall tents we like to hunt. We have tried a lot of bullets on a variety of game and one really stands out for us . For elk and bears we like to shoot 30 calibers of one sort or another and really like a 200 grain Speer Hot Core bullet . This has been a accurate and fast killing bullet . Give it a try and tell me your results ,  i think you will like it as much as we do.  John

I shoot a Browning A-bolt in 300wsm and most of the time use 180gr. and have had great results on moose, bear, sheep and deer. I will have to look into the 200gr ballistics.  Thanks.

Ballistics are pretty good in terms of flight and the punch is much better . We use to use 180 grain bullets in several flavors but we have noticed 200s perform much better on the business end of things .

Here's a .458 350gr Speer Hot Core Bullet. That was recovered from a bull I shot several years back at 302 yards. Found it just under the hide on the off side. Dropped him in his shadow. Accuracy was excellent, performance perfect. I intended for my shots to be closer in the timber but things turned out differently.





500gr Hornady, 405gr Remington, 350gr Speer Hot Core.

I don't know? They aren't huge but those 450 Ultra Magnum cartridges are. .375 Ultra, Necked up to .458

Wow I am impressed ! That is a good looking recovered bullet. The hot core strikes again . That type of bullet gives us that kind of performance consistently with 200 grains in our 30 cal. s also. Hits hard kills fast. We also have had very good results with 120 grain Hot cores in the 25.06 and 150 grain Hot cores in our 270 s . WE shoot close and we shoot em a ways out and the results are consistently good . The animals generally don't argue much.

The 200 gr Hotcor was my go to bullet in the 338-06. It was unstoppable! I actuall got better penetration with that than the 225 partition.

I ran the 350 Hotcor in the 458 win mag for a while too. Never shot anything bigger than a rabbit with it though

I had a Ruger #1 is 458 and never shot anything but Grey Diggers with it.  Should have seen my plunking partners jump when I let that first round loose!  That was a fun squirrel gun...for the first half dozen shots anyway.
Not sure how much fun the Ultra Mag would be though.  That looks punishing!

I had a Ruger #1 also in .458, wasn't bad off hand but a 500gr bullet off the bench let you know it was there. A couple local clowns wouldn't even shoot it off the bench.

I have a .450 Ackley that my Father built. It's fun to shoot, but would never consider shooting it off the bench with the 500gr solids.

a close friend I was privileged to know for many years was a rifles rifleman. He killed an amazing number of animals including elk with a 25.06. His bullet of choice was a 120 grain Speer hot core . I personally witnessed some amazing things this man did with this combination.
