Elk call

Since mouth diaphragm calls bring me to the brink of death due to gaging, what other bugles can I try?  I was considering the Primos Terminator, but only because of the good reviews it has. Any suggestions?

Ive never had a problem getting bulls to answer with the blue primos reed...I can work diaphragm reeds but in the heat of the moment I usually choke on them...tube design is all personal preference, alot of elk are being killed with bat style tubes these days but I still manage to fool a few bullz everyday with the old school pack bugles

I've got a Berry Thunder Bugle that works well. Phelps has an external reed attachment you can buy and attach to his tube. I'd buy that one if it were me. I'm bound and determined to learn how to bugle proper with a diaphragm.

I've used the backpack size primo's terminator and can make pretty good elk sounds. Easy to use!

Nice Racks, I don't want to see you give up on diaphragm calls without exhausting all possibilities.  The internal reed bugles are fine for locating and a very accomplished user can even get some additional elk noises out of them (chuckles/grunts) but they are still miles away from being as versatile and effective as diaphragms.  Here is a link for a company who makes some pretty unique calls for folks who have the same problem you do.  He's one of Elknut's sponsors and a world class caller.  It may be worth a few bones to try a few of his calls out.  Check with Travis from WRO and tell him I sent you his way to try out his diaphragms.

If that doesn't get you going, then the Berry Thunder Bugle is a very good internal reed call.  I've recommended it for over 20 years to guys that just can't quite get it going with diaphragms.  Good luck!  RJ

Nice Racks, as Phantom said, it is too early for you to give up on diaphragm calls.  Come to our elk calling seminar, and learn from some pros on how to do it properly.  (Bring your calls.)

I have the same problem and have used the Bugling Bull external for the last 7 or 8 years, it is a great call and elk seem to really like it.  I have hunted with other hunter and let them blow their Primos etc with no answer,  and then get an answer with my call at least a dozen times. As stated you can't do everything but I get enough out of my call to bring them in.

Try the Phelps medium frame diaphrams.  Great sound and no gagging...lol.

Bugling bulls game calls,  out of Idaho I think.   Easy to use,  gets results.  I bought one ten years ago, got a little instruction and had them coming in.  Of course a lot more to it if you want to be an expert but fun from the start.

We'll, I thought I'd give it another try with a diaphragm call and I ended up giving my wife a very good Mother's Day gift. She just happened to come in to the room where I was "practicing" and started laughing harder than I had ever seen. She was laughing at me because I was chocking and gagging; my face was beet red and more tears in my eyes than I thought I knew I had. However, 4 days later, I'm proud to say I am finally getting it. Will be buying more calls soon. Thanks for all of the advice and encouragement.

I can blow a locator, challenge, and even a lip ball bugle without choking on the diaphragm. Its the chuckling and grunting that scares me--having to suck in air over the reed. I suppose I practice do it outside the fire station so help isn't far away. Assuming they don't decide to turn the firehose on me while I figure it out
