Elk season comms

Hey all. Trying to figure out a decent communication mode for this years hunt. I want to be able to keep in touch with my group for obvious safety reasons and also in case someone gets something down, more hands makes quick work. We tried some cheapy Midland radios last year and they went about 100 feet. Terrible. What does everyone out there use? We will be in fairly steep ground this year. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

sounds like the terrain might be an issue for your signal strength.  I used to use a Motorola system 2-mile radius but I was always limited to 1/4 mile due to hunter companion rules.  I don't know the specs for what you have now but have never liked midland to begin with, motorola has some that claim to have 35 mile range maybe look into that. Try to find something with a high watt transmitter and long range which usually isn't ever as far as they claim but may be your best chance with the terrain you described.

Pardon my ignorance, but how exactly do you do a search. I just typed "radios" in the search box, and the only thing that came up was this thread. I'm actually interested in a packing list for elk. I typed in packing list before and didn't have much luck.

   In our group have a few with a Ham radio license and are never out of contact. Just need to pass a test for no code tech.

I guess I will x5 this? Haha thanks for the input gang. Kinda just reinforces everything I have been hearing. I would hate to lose my bro-in-law out in the sticks on his first hunting trip. Probably wouldnt go over too well with his wife:)

try"2 way radio" or "hunting list" use the " on each side of what your looking for narrows the search a bit.
