Rimrock muzzleloader tag Oct 1-10
« on: June 11, 2014, 09:04:35 PM »
Drew a Bull Rimrock Muzzleloader tag Oct 1-10. I drew this same tag 6 years ago. Took me 5 days to find the bulls but I know where they are now. Messed up on a big 5X6 last time and went home empty handed. Hope to get one this time. Fun to have 4 bulls in one basin bulging . Can't wait tell October.

I got drawn for modern any bull. I might have to hit up you guys for a little info for the area. I have been up there picking mushrooms, just not hunting elk. It was my second choice that I got drawn for, so I happy for that. Oh yea, not that mobile with my second knee replacement 6 months ago, but I'm going to give it my all. Craig, good luck on that muzzy tag!

Year of redemption for you with this tag!  I think a big bull will fall soon.  I'll be up there soon and will start looking for you.

I got a modern cow tag for that unit (3rd choice) I have spent a little time in there but not a ton. Should be fun. Will probably see some of you camping/scouting this summer.

Last day, hope you have tagged out already.  I have a friend who's wife drew in there.  One misfire and one miss.  Should have had one but didn't happen this time for her.

No bull for me. Seemed like all the elk moved out of the area I scouted. I did not see or hear a single elk in that area. I did have a close encounter with a large black bear while calling for elk. A bear 5 feet away is to close for comfort .

I moved to a new area about 1 1/2 miles away. Found a large herd of cows with 3 bull in or around them. I was on them for 3 days. They were in the steepest, nasty dark draw you could think of. I don't even know how they can walk around in there. They would not come out. So I ended up going down. 20-30 yards was about as far you could see in there. Usually less the. That.

The bulls were bugling about every 30 seconds. So I got ahead of them and dropped down into Hell to try and cut them off. When I got about even elevation with them I just did a few cow calls. It didn't take much to have 1 of the bulls come crashing toward me. I was in a more open area at this point. I could see maybe 30 yards. The bull only had two options. Come around the tree or stand behind it. He is about 20 yards away max. And he is going crazy. But won't move. I was by myself so he knew that cow should be right there and he could not see anything. I needed someone back aways calling.

After about 5 minutes I try and move a couple feet to see if I could see him . He saw me and shot out from behind the tree and brush at full speed knocking over anything in his way. I could just see a big rack crashing threw the trees. Then everything around me blew up with all the other elk headed to who knows were.

That was the last of my chances. It was warm and a big moon did not help things. I did not get as much time in the woods I wanted to. Family things and kids playoff football take a lot of time up.

Had a great time

This is where the. If bulls were hanging out. Very bottom of the pic in the dark stuff. And you can't even see the bottom of the draw in the picture. It's straight down

This is your view down there. 20-30 max. Usually less. There were 3 bulls and a bunch of cows within 100 yards when I took this picture.
