CLP

Hey guys,

I was told last week I shouldn't be using CLP on my muzzleloader - is that true?  I'm shooting a stainless Knight Bighorn.

If not, what should I be using for carbon breakup/long term protection?  Before I shoot/hunt, I dry complete anyways.

I just use hot water and soap to get the barrel real clean then finish with break free.

CLP is fine for long term protection, AFTER you clean it with soap and hot water and dry it.  Clean the CLP (any and all oil) from bore before you fire it or it will screw up the accuracy.

My process has been to soak everything in clp or solvent, then brush all the carbon off, then dry completely.  If it's at the end of season, I then oil everything for storage. If it's during summer (shooting season) or fall, I store dry.

Any issues?  I couldn't see why using clp would be an issue.

1.   Soap and water cleans better than CLP
2.   Soap and water is cheaper than CLP

Other than that I don’t see any issues.

Another product to try is called "Ballistol".  I just picked up a bottle of the stuff to try.  It sounds real similar to CLP but seems to be less expensive.

On the directions it says to use a ratio of 25% ballistol and 75% water when cleaning muzzleloaders.

I dont own a muzzy, but EWL Slip 2000 is my lube of choice

I use siip 2000 gun lube,  http://www.slip2000.com/downloads/GunLube.pdf  it is good for muzzleloaders and modern firearms.  I use their piston and choke cleaner to soak my breech plug.  Once you use it you will never go back.  The slip 2000 gun lube is a lot cheaper than EWL.  It is a CLP.  here is their main site    http://www.slip2000.com/index.php   click on products.  Once you use slip 2ooo you will forget about soap and water.
