UPDATED: Anyone ever see anything like this?

I have a Nikon P-223, 4-12x40 BDC 600...with something obviously very wrong!!

Has anyone ever experienced something like this?

If so, do you know what caused it?   

First time I have ever seen something like this with any brand of scope and it has me scratching my head....

It is not mounted at all, it is currently in a box on its way back to Nikon to see if they really do honor their "Lifetime warranty," but regardless, I was curious if anyone else had seen something like the fraying crosshair, hair, fiber or whatever it is and maybe knew what caused it.

Only thing I could really figure was something getting inside the scope during assembly?

It really amazes me how good scope companies have been with their clean rooms and assembly.  That is such a fine amount of nothing that shows up as something awful.  Final inspection should have caught it for sure unless it was floating around in the scope before finally finding a home where it did during shipping.  Nikon should make it right without question!

NIKON customer service is TOP NOTCH! they should fix you up

I wouldn't call anything "very wrong". Wouldn't affect the scope's performance at all, but might get annoying. Scope will be replaced with no question , so you should be just fine.

I have never seen that before but I am sure Nikon CS will get you taken care of correctly.
Keep me posted and if there is anything I can do to help you out let me know. I do freelance PR work for Nikon and know a lot of folks in Mgmt and would be happy to follow up for you.

Feel sorry for that guy, one, he is a nut case for sticking it down the tube, two, it must small to get it in there.

I don't think I'll ever be able to look thru or handle a Nikon scope again without first putting my PPE on or at the least using alcohol wipes on the whole thing.  That's just nasty!!!!
