I'm just trying to understand what the law really says? I wish a WDFW officer would comment on flossing.

Looking at the language in bold it seems that even if the fish is hooked outside the mouth, if you are fishing in fresh water and the fish is hooked anywhere on the head it is legal unless it can be proven the fish did not take the bait voluntarily.

Nope, you are reading it correctly.

I don't like laws like this, it really causes problems like you see in this topic of separating sportsmen and creating gray area, I wish they would use more precise language!

Here is the thing, the law is actually pretty clear! The issue at hand is that some sportsmen have taken it upon themselves to attach their own morals to the sport we all love and decided to take up arms against it. I would compare it to how some people felt about hound hunting. The difference is that "flossing" is impossible to prove. Ripping hooksets at the end of every drift could easily be construed as snagging but still can't be proven until a person retains a foul hooked fish.

If any of the people so against the idea of flossing think that anything positive is going to come of this they are severely deluded.

FWIW a long leader isn't necessarily the best way to floss. The correct length for conditions is!

This is possibly an even dumber argument than one over which religion is best... Anti-fishing/hunting people are active enough in trying to screw us out of fish and game STOP helping them!

I would add the popular Kenai/Russian River fisheries in AK as other prime examples. Those, the Fraser, and the Puyallup are probably the most extreme proliferations of flossing being the preferred method that I'm aware of.

But it happens all the time in many/most river salmon fisheries. Even if the leader is shorter and the guy holding the rod isn't attempting to floss. The Dick Nite trick on kegged up silvers is another example where flossing accounts for a lot of the "bites". Swinging a fly is actually quite effective for flossing also.

How can a law prevent a something that happens when even the most ethical of anglers fishes in a river with numbers of salmon? and when even the fisherman can't be sure of how the fish was hooked? The situation  (as posted by Soady) has had unfortunate side effects. But the legality is not normally enforceable, and the ethics are about as clear as mud.

I get the "flossin aint fishing" movement...I most fly fish the rivers... but, given that flossing is legal in this state...this guy doesnt do anything illegal and I havent ever seen him be rude back to all the people that are rude to him. I HATE to see sportsmen bashing legal sportsmen...just because they use a different technique.

We have enough attacks from non-sportsmen...lets slow our roll on fellow legal sportsmen guys.

1st post here,    . I'm a Moderator on FishChan a very low end but highly visited site. So I'm very familiar with this character OffDaHook. He trolls EVERY BB that has a fishing forum.   He lives in Tacoma and fishes every river from the Cowlitz to the Puyallup. You guys have been totally bamboozled by this troll   .  His M.O. is exactly what he did here. Comes on and starts a blaze fire, then watches all the board members go into a uproar.  Basically a BB arsonist.

As for the flossing subject it happens everywhere!  I don't believe ODH is a unethical fisherman. Just a troll.

Why would you want to ban a guy that catches fish and post pictures. The owner of the board might be paying him to post here this one thread is already 5 pages. Good business to have him here and it sure brings out the best in a few men.
