Favorite Kuiu clothing pieces?
« on: November 15, 2014, 01:38:44 PM »
Hey, just curious if you have a favorite piece from Kuiu and why?

I have the guide vest and 145 zip-t merino in vias, and the attack pant in major brown. My favorite piece right now is the attack pant. Looking into the Yukon jacket for an all season/weather piece.

The Yukon is like a really heavy piece of Chugach Rain gear.  Not any insulation just more durable.  I would go with Chugach for rain gear.    I sent my Yukon Back and went with lighter rain gear.   I really like my superdown zip T - 7 oz.  Tho I woul;d go for the 9 oz down jacket if I did it over for the full zip.

Thanks for the info!!  Are you talking about going with the superdown zip-t if you were to do it again? I'm now thinking that and the guide jacket. I think the guide jacket would be more along the lines of what I was thinking...

I have the superdown zip T and its just a great item to stuff in a sandwich baggie in your pack and if you get a lil chilled pop it on under something.   But I think the fullzip superdown jacket at 20% more insulation would be even better.  There are times the zip T is just barely warm enough.

On Top: I wear firstlite Merino baselayer by itself when hiking hills unless wet or windy.  Add Sitka 90% if it cools down or hiking slow.  Put on Kuiu superdown puffy (zip T) under the 90% if stationary, put on sitka rain gear if wet or really windy (kuiu chugach as good or better but sitka really packable. )

Sitka 90% is not weather resistant, does shed snow a but better than fleece.  A good fleece or wool pullover just as good or better I think.

I like all my Kuiu clothes, but my favorite is the Attack Pants. They are my favorite pair of pants I've ever owned. I also really like my Chugach rain gear, Guide Jacket, and Super Down Zip Tee. These are the Kuiu pieces that stand out the most to me.

The super down hooded jacket is without a doubt my favorite piece. It's got the rest of the competition whipped as far as it's purpose.

Favorite piece by far is the Attack pants. Throwing in the rest of my Kuiu top 5 for good measure...

1. Attack Pants - In my opinion, the best all season hunting pants on the market.
2. Gaiters - Nothing revolutionary, they just plain work.
3. Superdown Jacket - I'm getting all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.
4. Chugach - Would have ranked much higher but the noise factor knocked it down a couple of slots.
5. Belt - I know, I know. A belt on a top 5 list seems stupid. However, I've went through many belts that were a literal pain in the but (and hips) when wearing a pack. This one is almost perfect.

And, before I start sounding like a Kuiu spokesman. Here are my least favorite...

1. Neck Gaiter - Too thin and too itchy. Switched to FL and couldn't be happier
2. Guide Jacket - Cuffs were way too small. Inner linning gripped everything. It was like having a severe case of static cling.
3. Guide Beanie - Seriously, is this thing made for infants???
4. Guide Pant - No real complaints, just didn't work for me.
5  Ok, so I don't have a 5th item that I don't like. But the lists had to be even right? So I'm going to say that recieving an email about the golden ticket giveaway the day after I throw out the winter catalog (without looking at it) is going down as my 5th least favorite thing about Kuiu right now.  :chuckle:  And you know I would have went dumpster diving after that thing if the garbage man hadn't already ran.  :chuckle:

Thanks for a solid rundown!!   Are the guide pants thicker than the attacks?  I'm thinking late season?  That sucks about the guide jacket...hmmm...i was leaning towards it...  any experience with their gloves? Also, i'm talking myself into the bino harness. Thanks!

For me the Kuiu gloves are fine for general purpose but in the cold they get cold.

For light use and conditions almost any glove works.  For cold wet canadian type conditions or winter tree stand or spotting scope use almost no glove works - you need a snowmobile type mitten with a finger slot and then light gloves underneath.

Yes, the Guide pants are thicker than the attack pants.

As far as I'm concerned, there's not a top name brand glove that works as well is frigid conditions as a heavy wool glove. Even the heavy fleece gloves get my vote over any of the others.

I really like my guide jacket and gaiters. The merino gloves are comfortable and guide gloves work. My attack pants are comfortable but man did the clear cuts and side hilling tear them up. Pretty disappointed on the durability

The Kuiu gear is well thought out, quality gear. Very comfortable wool base layer shirts. Interesting story about how the company started and operates. I also use some tactical clothing from Crye Precision, well made camo jackets, pants combined with gloves and gaitors from Outdoor Research. Three top notch companies for hunting clothing.

Looking at Kuiu for a general light jacket - Have the new Sitka 90% but it doesn't shed water at all.  Wonder why they don't make an Attack Jacket just pants?

Firstlite Merino Baselayer, Kuiu superdown puffy, Chugach Raingear is hard to beat.
