300 WSM vs. 325 WSM???
« on: December 27, 2008, 10:12:58 AM »
I've got a 270 WSM that I use for deer hunting and am looking to buy a larger caliber for elk and other big game that I plan to hunt in the future (ie: moose).  I'm trying to decide between a 300 WSM or a 325 WSM.  Any thoughts?

I'd go with the 300 WSM only for the reason that I believe ammunition will be more readily available than for the 325 WSM, in the future. With a good premium bullet the 300 will do anything the 325 will do, in my opinion.

if you already have the .270 I'd opt for the .325 if you wanted one gun to do double duty the .300 would be the way to go. but for a 2 gun battery Id go 325. JB

If it were me I'd just keep the 270WSM. :twocents:

But if you want a new gun 8). I'd get a 300 WSM just because I think it will be around a lot longer then the 325WSM. But both are great rounds.

300 to 325 is mostly just a difference in selection of bullet weights and with that bullastics.

325would probably be a little harder to find to keep a good supply. even in bullets and brass if you plan to reload.

ever look at .338 federal?

yeah that

I would buy the 325 for sure if remington would chamber it. It is a neat newer type of caliber and if you reload you will never have a problem with ammo. But if you dont just buy alot at one time and no worries.

Why not use the 270wsm with a good 150gr. or even 160gr. Nosler Partitions bullets? If thats an excuse to purchuse another gun by all means go ahead. I was thinking on using a 150gr. bonded bullet for my Remington 700xcr in 270wsm. Have killed many deer with factory Winchester 150gr. Power Point ammo. But they blow up when they hit any major bone. If I wanted a heavier caliber I would go with the 338 caliber and up.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

300WSM or 338 Federal.  I would probably start with a 338RUM then the 338 Federal.  I have a 300WSM and a 300RUM and love them both.

save your money, ya got a good gun. with todays selection of bullets, ya can hunt anything with that, save Griz. want to shoot Elk, Moose or black bear. its just a matter of bullet choice, and today the selection is huge. you can go with bullets such as a 150 triple shock and drop anything. ya can go with a 140 and blaze a round at a deet at 500, you can go 120 or 130 wt and shoot flat as a lazer at a yote. i think you already have the perfect rifle. if you didn't have a rifle at all the debate can be great, as to what to get, but you already have one, and i think you made a good choice.

gearhead makes a good point. you would probably be worlds ahead as a gameshot if you instead of buying a new rifle bought several hundred dollars worth of bullets and shot the hell outta your 270wsm. my :twocents: JB

Nosler makes a 160gr. Partition Bullet. Here is load data from Nosler.

the heavier 160grn bullets are much more popular in europe because it is the lower end of legal caliber for pig hunting. many hunters use their 7x57 for everything.

No don't save your money buy a new gun....in fact buy several new guns.  Then work extra or side jobs and buy a lot of ammo for all of them.  Shoot one of them a lot for skills, and use the others for your hunting.  Shooting skills is more important then caliber in 95% of situations.  I personally have a different gun/caliber for every hunting situation that I know I am going into.  I don't want my huge 300RUM for close quarters Whities, but I do want my 20" 30-06 instead.  Many more exhamples can be made.  If and when I start hunting Whities hard again I am buying a new gun in a new caliber.

I love my 325wsm, good shooting gun with lots of capabilities for even the bigger bears and Moose.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.
