Finally Cut My Tag-Finally have pics
« on: December 28, 2008, 09:19:08 PM »
Sorry this is delayed but I just got back into town after visiting family for Christmas.  It took about 50 days of hunting but I finally cut my multi season deer tag on Christmas Eve morning.  After I passed on several does, passed on a button buck at least 5-6 times, passed on a two point during the early season, and screwed up a chance at a bigger three point and ran out of light on others several times, I finally got a three by two.  I went out to my blind early in the morning knowing that it may be my last day to hunt.  At about 8:15 the little button buck came out and fed and gave me several chances at a broadside shot at 25 yards.  I watched him for about 15 minutes but just could not bring myself to shoot him.  Suddenly he spooked and ran for cover.  I figured that would probably be the only deer I would see so I got off my stool and sat down in the snow to drink my thermos of coffee.  Just as I reached for my thermos I saw another deer about 70 yards down the tree line, and he had horns.  I figured I had screwed up because I was now sitting down and was too low to shoot over the top of the hay bales.  I waited until he dropped into a little hole and picked up my bow but I was still too low to shoot over the front of my blind.  The deer hung up about 35 yards away at a 90 degree angle to my blind in a position that gave me no cover at all.  If I tried to move he would see me for sure.  My only hope was for him to keep coming and get in front of the blind which would give me a chance to get up to my knees and shoot over the top.  I was blessed.  He walked about another 20 yards and stopped directly in front at about 25 yards away.  I slowly got up to my knees and lifted my bow over the top of the bales.  I made enough noise in the snow that I figured he would be gone for sure but the bales must have blocked the noise.  He was slightly angled so I put it through the last couple of ribs and it came out close to the opposite shoulder.  At first it seemed like I missed because he barely flinched.  He took a few steps and started to wobble.  He dropped at about 20 yards.  I called my wife and she brought the camera and helped me load him up.  Ended up being about 100 lbs hanging.  Not huge but not bad for my first archery deer.  Decided to do a shoulder mount (don't laugh) since it was my first archery deer and he has kind of a funky rack.  Will post pics as soon as I get it figured out.
