The rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard in .223, with a Leopold 3x9 mounted.  I bought it about 7 years ago as a dedicated coyote waster.  I went in to the gun shop planning on buying a Remington 700 (I've shot a few of them, great guns), but I decided to save a little coin and went with the more inexpensive Weatherby.  It's a great rifle; lightweight, great trigger, and dead-on-balls-accurate.

My dad and I were at Sportsman Warehouse 7 or 8 years ago just looking around wasting time on a Sunday afternoon and noticed they had this little Vanguard .223 on sale for $329.  It was very similar to yours except it had a tan colored stock and heavier barrel, it was about the same contour as a Rem. Sendero, the barrel was 20 inches and had a 1-12 twist.  My dad has never been a big fan of .223's but I talked him into buying it because it was so cheap for a brand new gun.  He grumbled the whole time but went ahead and bought it, the whole time complaining how he'll never shoot it and it'll just collect dust.  He got it home, scoped it up with a Nikon Monarch he had and loaded up some 40&50 grain Nosler Ballistic tips with Benchmark.  First time out of the box and it was shooting bug hole groups at 100yds with both the 40's and 50's, even with the crappy factory trigger that has since been swapped out for a Timney.  That little Vanguard, made by Howa, has easily been the most accurate off the shelf rifle he has ever bought.  He didn't think he'd like that short barrel until he used it a few times to dispatch a couple coyotes, then he found out real quick those little shorties can be pretty handy to use.

Thanks, Bigfoot. I like my Weatherby, too - also with Leupold scope, and also very accurate. I would like to have more.....maybe when I win the lottery...I can replace some that were stolen.

Funny you bring up Sportsmen's Warehouse, I got it at the Kennewick store.  Sorry to hear your guns were stolen, Pink.

Yeah, Scotty - they got my Weatherby .22-250, a nearly irreplaceable Winchester 9422 XTR Classic in .22WMR (with scope), and a Taurus PT99. NRA Insurance covered $500 of the loss. I replaced the Taurus, but have never been able to afford replacing the Winchester. That's the saddest part of it.

I just bought a Savage Axis II XP in .223 Remington, but I'm not sure that's an even replacement for the Weatherby. I'd be comfortable hunting coyote with either the Winchester or the Weatherby if I still had them. Lots of time has passed since that happened. It's still painful to think about that day.

On the flip side, things are looking up. The kids are all grown up and out of the house. I have a little more time to enjoy my hobbies. I'm learning everything I can about coyote hunting as I've never done it before. I don't plan on going out and "slayin' 'em", but I do want to try my luck at it and reduce the numbers of them around my place a little.

I had a Winchester 9422 XTR Classic back when I had a horse.  That was quite the fun and accurate little saddle gun.  Been a lot of years and I'm still cursing myself for getting rid of it!  That's a bad deal for sure
