Information please on the S&W 686 - Thanks for the info - please remove

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the S&W 686. I saw a video about it but it seemed more like a sales pitch. I was looking for someone that had personnel information.

Basically the video that I saw shows a guy shooting at quite a distance accurately. The gun only has a 3" barrel and I have a S&W model 66 with a 6" barrel and it don't seem to be that accurate at longer distances. (I know its the idiot behind the barrel)
In the video he was hitting what appeared to be a 6" tall bird from around 100 to 150 feet.

I was interested more for my son. He is getting his CCP and was asking for advice on which weapon to get. I stumbled onto the video about the 686 and was interested in getting more information about the gun.

I have the 6" and it is extremely accurate. It is not what I would get as a conceal. It's fairly big.

Like others here, I also have the 6". I wouldn't consider it a concealed carry weapon, even with the 3" barrel. I doubt my pants would stay up and I seldom wear a jacket indoors to have a shoulder rig. Wonderful gun, though. An old high school friend (retired Renton detective Lt.) who is/was a certified S&W armorer, tuned mine up, set the timing on the money and did a trigger job. Really makes a sweet gun.

Before my home was made into a "no shooting" zone, I had a 30 yard range set up in the back yard. I could sit on the porch and ring a 10" gong every time offhand using .38 spl ammo.

Don't know about a 6 inch barrel but I like my 4 inch for carrying in the woods

I've owned 2  686's.  Both 2 1/2" bbls.  My current daily carry is the 686+ Performance center model.   The weight is less of an issue than the bulk.   I carry owb strong side in a galco,    Atleast until my lobo holster arrives.

Accuracy is excellent,  better than my 3" model 65,  but the 686 is a little bigger and heavier than the k frame

686 is a big gun, very accurate and very well made. I have and I have seen people hit pop cans at 100 yards with them. I have seen better 100 yard groups on paper targets fired by folks with a 686/19/586/66 then other folks were doing with carbines.
I think a 686 needs a 4-6 inch barrel, if you want to conceal, get an all round smaller gun. Like a 5 shot S&W mod.36.  You can carry a 686 but it is BIG, needs a good holster.

It's also hard to find a good holster that you can carry concealed in that range, not a lot of makers. (4-6").  I have the 4" and just carry it sometimes bow-hunting in a shoulder rig.

Agree.

I have carried my 686 every hunting season since 1986. Would not leave the road without it..... Excellent gun.
