Spring Permit - Monroe - Winner's Lounge
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:14:46 AM »
Well, which fellow Hunt-WA members do I have to assist/compete with in the Monroe unit?  We can share intel and hopefully bring that success rate of this hunt up a little.  The last time I drew there were 2 bears taken in the entire season.  It'd be great to see at least 10 of the 25 tags filled.

D-Rock, I know you didn't draw, so please stay out of the winner's lounge.  There's a place for you, it just not here (but the bar would be a good place to start). :chuckle:

Congrats Stang. I couldn't get it done this time but if you want some assistance, gimme a call.

I managed to pull a tag. This will be my first spring bear hunt and I am very excited about. Congrats to the rest of you who drew.

I've got a pdf of the map area from a few years ago that I'm trying to find to give a head start on the planning.  Surely some of the area has changed, but I bet most of it is pretty dang close.

Note: You're not allowed to drive across the Spada dam, even if your key opens the gate.  Also, the alarms scare bears anyway.

It will be a blast for you Monroe folks! While not a winner of Monroe this year, (I got skagit) I have been successful in that unit, so I feel I can post briefly,...not trying to steal D rocks place... :chuckle:Looking forward to the pics and stories! Best of luck to you all!

Thanks guys. That will all be very helpful.

As far as I understand it the process is I kind of wait around until I am contacted about getting a key and the map for the area. After that its time to start putting the miles on.

That has been my experience in the past.

For now, you can familiarize yourself with the map and the gate entrance points and use some aerial maps to familiarize yourself with the road system if you aren't already.  Keys wont work at EVERY gate location, but it could be worth driving around and locating the gates visually so you know where your options are (if you had time for that).

Usually the bears aren't out until mid May, but this year they could be out earlier.  If you had to find a time to concentrate your time on actual hunting it'd be in the second half of the season, not the first.   :twocents:

Gallion....I believe that there will be a meeting in Mill Creek. You should def attend. They give out packets, dashboard placards, and gate key/combo. They give some info regardign damage areas and had timber folks there as well. In 2013 it was a key, no deposit. Last year it was a combo for pad locks. Soon as you can, get out and start driving and walking around and exploring. This is no slam dunk...In 2013 I know of 4 tags filled...I filled one, Turner89 and his boy filled one each, and I don't know who did the 4th. Grassy old roads and openings are the ticket I believe. If you find peels that is good and all, but, that means the bears HAVE BEEN, not are there. Usually lots of good info being shared about the Monroe unit.
