Do You Speak Elk?
«

Wow, another elk season is drawing closer each passing day. And by the grace of the elk gods, our state is actually giving us a bit more of the rut! That said, we'll be hunting for the first time in many years much closer to the peak of the elk rut if not right smack dab in the middle of it. What does that mean? Well, it means that the majority of the cows will be coming into estrus during the last week of our archery season which may very well translate into some pretty intense elk vocalization and battling for the right to breed the cows. Knowing and understanding what elk are saying/demanding/warning/asking for is the key in many situations between a successful hunt and just another learning experience in our elk career. How is your knowledge on elk vocalization? Do you know what chuckles mean when given in response to your cow calls and the best way to respond (verbally or physically)? If you are in close to a herd bull and his ladies, I mean really close, and exhale the last breath you have at the end of a bugle/scream with another note, what does that translate to in elk speak and how can that play into my favor? Is merely using cow calls in all vocalization scenarios the absolute best method to arrow an elk? Can you repetitively make the 4 or 5 basic elk sounds needed for success in most situation?
A. Yep, I've been hunting these stinky galoots long enough that I understand what is being said in most encounters, and, I have the vocal arsenal to respond with my calls appropriately when needed "correctly" to maximize my odds.
B. I'm above average and feel that I understand the majority of elk sounds, and, can make some pretty sweet elk noises.
C. I need work on both understanding elk language and behavior and need to finally dig into the Elknut philosophy on elk language interpretation and learn what I don't know.
D. Elk just make noises like a dogs or sheep do. There is no understanding/interpreting. Hear them, move in, and shoot them.
E. Other.

C. I have been successful calling in a decent amount of elk. But not sure where the conversation is going till it happens. I can talk elk but can't speak elk. So i hope to be more successful this year after rewatching elk nuts videos over and over to get a better understanding of what has gone wrong in past failures.
Thanks again elknut for the video. Great amount of info and very informative.

I recently purchased two of Elknut's DVD's so I hope to improve somewhat over the summer. Not sure if I'll even get to hear any bugling bulls though, since I'm hunting the muzzleloader season.

Im gona go with B, although a majority of my hunting is in eastern Oregon which is kind of cheating. Elk there are just more vocal which might be because their archery season goes until almost the end of Sept.

I'm not sure where I stand...if average means the average success rate in September then we'll I'm alil above that
but there's so much to learn ! Still haven't purchased elknuts products
but my tags are nearly paid for ! So it's getting higher on the priority list...
I have a pretty good feeling bout this fall... big bulls are hitting the dirt !!!
Ps...heard my first bugle already...
