A different type of new guy question

I'm interested in learning how to shoot a bow and, ultimately hunting with one. I have effectively zero bow experience and am a true beginner.

I also come with a fun challenge. I'm 6'8, wear a 38/39 sleeve shirt and based on some calculations need a 32-34" draw length.

So, what are my options for a bow that I don't need to sink $1,000 into as well as will align with my draw length? Any tips for shooting from bigger/taller shooters out there?

are you looking for a compound or traditional?  You can get online kits that you can build your own for trad bows.  You have to tiller it.  But a few models are pretty big, and start at high poundage--220# and work your way down to what you are comfortable with.

Find a local pro shop, and talk to them. Online is ok when you know exactly what you want.  At the same time I like supporting the local shops.

Thanks guys. I was chatting with the guys at SportCo yesterday a bit. I'm still deciding if I want to go down this path, but it also seems like something cool I can do with my kids in the back yard.

If you get a compound make sure you get one with a large Axle to Axle

Sorry to say it, but finding a bow longer than 32" draw these days is extremely difficult.  And when you find one it's likely to be north of $1,000.  Manufacturers used to make a few more than they do now, but finding used bows in the 33" draw range is likely to be even more difficult.  Even Hoyt's Tribute and long draw models aren't stocked in that length anymore.  Hoyt, Mathews, Martin and PSE would likely make you one as it's not all that difficult to *censored*ize one.  However, as with all things custom, you're likely to pay for it!

Xpedition has the wonderful Perfexion that is stocked at 32.5"!  Martin has the new Condor at 33".  Beyond that I think your looking for an old Hoyt Montega or a custom build.

Thanks for the intel on the models to look for. I was talking to one of the guys at Bass Pro yesterday and he mentioned that with the trigger releases becoming ubiquitous, manufacturers have quit going above the 30" draw. Alright, I think that archery hunting might be on the list of stuff my size prevents me from doing. Besides, I don't think 6'8, 425lbs is meant to be putting a stalk on an animal.

Can't you just take a saw to an aluminum bow and cut the handle off, adjust everything else back a few inches and weld it all back together?

Bowtech Boss has a 32" draw. With a D loop you can get that to about 32 1/2 - 32 3/4 ish.

Go to a pro shop, not a box store to get measured.

I know a guy that is almost 6'7 and has a 31" draw. He doesn't have broad shoulders.

Good catch!  I missed that one   Freak is a great bow and does come in 33".  $950 suggested retail, but you might find a lower cost option on that bow somewhere if you are patient.  DC cam is really nice

Should be able to find the older Hoyt Montega for less right now.  Might be difficult to find one in 32-34", but it is possible.  9" brace height, laminated limbs, good wall, 44"...It's one heck of a bow for the finger shooters and giants of the world!  If you watched Archery Talk and kept a look out on EBay and other internet sites I bet you find one for $500 or better.  And those limbs are so good you could find one with 10,000 shots and it's probably just getting broke in perfect.
