Bear season dates?
« on: July 24, 2015, 08:59:23 AM »
What is/are the reasons for the different opening dates for general bear season i.e (aug.1 .aug.15 and sep.1) why doesn't it open all on the same day ?

Short answer. Politics and political correctness.

Nearly all wildlife species are managed differently in different parts of the state. There are 140 GMUs in Washington.  The variations are based primarily on different harvest objectives in different parts of the state.

I think that is less true for bears.

Are east side cubs dependent on being with sows slightly longer in the year?  Is it too hot on the eastside to hunt a month earlier--meat spoilage?  About all I can come up with.

They do the same in Idaho and a lot of it seems to do with hunting pressure. units close too town-easier access have shorter seasons. Upper joe and other harder to access area bear seasons almost never close. I Think it also(in Idaho) does have to do with elk/deer populations relative to overall predators and to a lesser extent the overall bear population. My experience is Washington has a bewildering amount of hunting units and often very different regulations for ones that border each other. (this has been deer hunting with my son not bear hunting). I have to think this has something to do with writing tickets! keep washington green!
