Load advice 300 WSM
« on: August 07, 2015, 06:58:22 PM »
So right now I'm a bit limited on funds and have enough supplies for around 20-25 rounds to reload and have not reloaded much with this caliber. I am hoping to lower the curve on this to get up and running for bear and as time goes on I will further develop a good load. So Here is what I have and I'm looking for advice on starting powder charge for these 20 rounds. I'm hoping to save 10 of them for hunting bear in the next few weeks. I know I'm close to center target on factory rounds that I had so hopefully that is good.

Gun: Winchester Model 70 24" barrel timney 3# trigger
Bullet: Barnes TSX 180 gr
Powder: IMR 4350 (I do have Varget but don't know if that would be good or not)
Winchester brass and nickle cases
Winchester large magnum primers.

My Barnes manual says 57.5-65.5 gr of powder. So given the limited supplies, what are your suggestions on powder charges?

Thanks and I appreciate any and all help. Wish I had more components to develop this cartridge. I did get my 30-06 dialed in good and now its this guns turn to draw blood. I will be out on Ebey Island range tomorrow to test these out.

Oh, also right now I'll just be hunting west side so no long range shots if that makes a difference.

Tony

Load up 8 rounds between 58.0gr and 65.0gr with the bullet .050" off of the lands. Test fire them watching for pressure signs as you work up. Get the rifle rough zeroed (if it isn't already) during these shots. If you don't have pressure signs on the top charges then pick the charge weight you want and load up the rest of your components with that load. Fire a 3 shot group to confirm performance and you'll have 9-12 loaded rounds left to hunt with. If you're shooting 300 yards and under then any group under 1.5" will be adequate to hunt with.

If you have a chronograph use it while stepping up the powder charge and watch for the velocity to hit about 2850-2950 fps.

I have the same gun as you but not saying they will shoot the same because they are the same model .. here is what I came up with my gun ..Takes a lot of playing around sometimes to get your gun shooting to its capability ..

                                                                       300 WSM
                                                            180 GR Hornaday Interlock
                                                            66.5 gr IMR 4831  O.A.L 2.840

Results at 100 yrds !  Only problem I have is finding the bullets ...luckily I have 4 boxes loaded !

A little late to be messing with load data. If stick with factory ammo until the season is over.

It's never too late  to play with ammo :dunno:  3 month season seams long enough. Besides there are plenty of other rifles ready to go if this one doesn't pan out. Just wanted to get this one going. Thanks.

My mistake. I thought you were going out for bear soon with new ammo. And yes, recoil therapy is great year round. Just not in the woods during other seasons.
