Hunter orange
« on: August 11, 2015, 06:43:22 PM »
I am currently saving for a wingworks best. It only has around 200 square inches of orange on it and I need 400 square inches of orange to be legal. What does everyone use to get to the legal requirements? I will most likely end up buying a hat or shirt to get legal but wanted to hear you guys do to get there?

I use a shooting shirt with blaze orange patches. Love my wingworks. So comfortable new. I can't wait until it is fully broken in.

I wear orange vests; usually the lightest and cheapest one I can find that is somewhat quiet.

An orange hat will get you about another 100 square inches. That's probably good enough. I doubt the game warden is going to break out a ruler and calculate the square inches of orange. I sure like Wyoming, all you need is an orange hat.

It's really only an issue on release sites imo.

Q. How many square inches of hunter orange is on the vests?
A. WW vests have just over 165 square inches of hunter orange in the form of Tenmile Cloth.  Adding  a blaze orange shoulder harness will push a vest to 200 square inches.

I wear a cheap, zip up, light weight, blaze orange vest under my strap upland vests. I wish more strap upland vest vendors would just make solid blaze orange models. I fear another example of non-hunters making equipment. :dunno:

I typically wear a hat and either an orange long sleeve shirt under my vest and when it gets cold, I have a Cabela's jacket with orange sleeves.

Wear a orange HAT!!

I ran into a hunter once that got mad at me for hunting birds and walking towards him.  He was wearing a very faded orange vest in 5 foot plus grass.  I told him I never saw him and that he should wear a orange hat.

He said that a vest was ALL he legally needed.  Well, there is a difference between minimum legal requirements and being safe!!

He damn, well saw me in my orange hat but never said or whistled anything when I was approaching.

WA regs:Under the following conditions a minimum of 400 square inches of
fluorescent hunter orange exterior clothing is required. It must be worn
above the waist and be visible from all sides. A hat, by itself, does not meet
this requirement.
•• During any upland game bird season, anyone hunting upland game
birds or rabbits with a modern firearm is required to wear fluorescent
hunter orange clothing. (Grouse are not upland game birds.)

Just wear an orange hat and something with orange sleeves under it and you'll be good to go. Unless you're really hassling a game warden I doubt they will bother to measure with all that on. They have bigger fish to fry.

Thanks trophyhunt!  Yeah, the Orange Aglow mesh vest is very minimal and easily meets the legal requirements (size Small is over 600 square inches).  Also, the Safety Panel might be a good idea if you'd just like to add an additional 115".
