Coyote hunting without a call
« on: September 06, 2015, 12:07:20 PM »
I have about 2000 acres that we farm and run cows on. We have been having coyote problems lately as a lot of the ground was put in CRP 9 years ago. We typically pick off the yotes as we see them, but I want to try to lure them in. I have ordered a few Cartridge Calls, 2 .223 and 1 .308. I was hoping to be able to try my luck at luring them in some other way while I wait for them to arrive as I have no work till Wednesday.

Has anyone here had luck at bringing in yotes without a call? What did you use/do? I can probably find some old meet in the fridge I could let thaw out. Would they come to that?

Well  ..maybe this fall I can come help you out with that problem ....otherwise you need a dead cow or something you can use for bait ...any large farm animal that has died will work well !

About three years ago we had a dead cow that we dragged into the CRP. Used up a lot of 6mm that year. Think we counted a dozen or more yotes. The problem is that a dead calf is $1000 and the full grown cows are a lot more. Do not really care for that kind of bait. I think that was the last cow we have lost.

I have some meat I had sliced to make beef jerky that has been in the freezer for quite some time. Might pull that out just for the hell of it. Figure once it turns rancid it should smell good to a yote. If that don't work I guess I am just waiting till my new calls get here.

Might try a dog squeaky toy? I've stopped them with a rubber ball with a squeak in it

You were born with a call. Your lips. You would be surprised how many yotes have been killed using lip squeaks alone. Or to pump up the volume us the back of your hand "kissing" it loudly.  Works great!

Did not even think about apple. Would any fruit work? Rotten fruit? I have tried making noise with my lips but did not think about kissing my hand. Should make a nice squeal.

My wife and mother in law are good friends with Dawn. She just lives down the road. We have baught some bulls from her and even sold her a calf whos momma died.

I know Dawns Mom and Dad, before he passed away. That's how I met her. Been coyote hunting down there a few times during the snow and you need a snow machine to get around. We normally do drive-bys anyhow....
