Finally opening day has made its way back around!
But this year will be a little different for me, I just got engaged a few months ago, will be getting married next May! Anyway,
My fiancé wants to come with me this year, and I couldn't be happier that she wants to give it a try, she will just be tagging along this year, not caring a gun, seeing what it's all about, how she likes it, learning a few things, really just observing! She didn't want to go through hunters safety, get her license and buy a tag of she wasn't going to enjoy it.. I'm really just happy she's giving it a shot, of she doesn't like it at least I can say she attended going out with me and learning..
But my concern, we will be going in the wenas area, as I do every year the past 5 years. I know you don't always see as much action around here as you do other areas! So for you other hunters that have showed a new hunter what it's all about, your wife's/ husbands, son and daughters. How did you keep them interested when at times it could get a tad bit "boring" for some one new thinking hunting is just going out, shooting a deer and coming home! What were some things you guys did to keep them interested. Thank you in advance for who ever decides to reply!

I think it has to a lot with the person. I've had both my boys out since they could walk. My oldest boy eats, breathes and sleeps hunting and fishing. My youngest likes it if he shoots something but doesn't really get what it is about. Spending time with family and friends in the great outdoors. Helping people learn to hunt and educating people that don't.  And if the good lord besses you, possibly providing food for your family. My wife has been going with me for the last five years. I think it was my passion for the outdoors that got her out there and now she loves it as much as I do. Our family vacations are mostly based around hunting, fishing and camping. I'm not sure that helps any but it's all I've got. Congratulations on your engagement and good luck on your trip.

Get them involved.  Try to show them along the way what you've learned and whats kept your interest.  Hunting is about the hunt and the sport of it not just going out in the woods killing something.  Besides after you shoot the fun and the hunt is over, now its the gross stuff women don't enjoy(packing out,gutting, skinning, meat processing.)  Get her a pair of binoculars so she can help you glass and look for animals, show her tracking and differences in tracks that she probably wouldn't notice on her own.  The more she knows the more involved she is the more interested she will be, I would think.  But who knows maybe she just tagging along because she thinks you want her to and will take no interest in hunting at all, cough (city slickers.)  I do hope that's not the case for you though even if she doesn't decide to hunt I hope she has fun.  Good luck naches.

I would have gotten her the HE Deferral so she could hunt.

Take her grouse hunting,  the deer might be a bit much if she's never been exposed to blood n guts

Be sure to point out all of the other cool stuff that we as hunters get to see that others don't, ie. other wildlife, beautiful views, etc.

To be 100% honest nothing any man did got me involved it was my own curiosity.  My ex husband and his family made me mostly thing hunters were mouth breathing morons.  Hey said I was being honest.  When I decided to get interested in hunting it was all me ...yes some amazing men helped me find info, took me hunting, and helped me learn but my desire was all mine.

I am not hunting this season and I am dying here it sucks ballz I hate it but there is not one thing I can do to change it. So if she is interested take her answer her questions and encourage her because every new hunter is a good thing.

I'd take her somewhere away from the people and try to give her a more positive experience.

What ever you do MAKE SURE IT IS FUN!!!  If you what them to continue to go with you you have to match the hunt to their interest level and physical exertion level. I personally like to leave the truck before daylight and return after dark. I enjoy hunting with my wife but when I do I hunt at her speed. I know she is only good for 3-4hrs so I try to pick a hunt that is suited for her. I know there will be plenty of days she will no interest in hunting and those are the days I hunt at my speed. When I started out I went to hunter education with her and I taught her to shoot and bought her license and tag. She told me she didn't know if she could kill something. I told her she didn't have to that isn't what the hunt is about, it's about spending time in the field with the people you care about and sharing your experiences together. The highs and the lows. Since you are talking about you fiancé you will want to make sure you prepare her well to make a clean kill. There is nothing that will turn them off faster than a messy kill or lost animal. I know if you do it long enough sooner or later it will happen but those first few times it has to be clean. I always volunteer cleaning, gutting and butchering the animals but try to show them it is like a science project. In the end they will want to help you. My most memorable hunts have been with my wife and daughters not my biggest kills.

Agree to leave your cell phones in your vehicle (or for safety purposes in your pockets), ensure you enjoy the woods.  Point out the different animals that may happen upon you, squirrels, rabbits, whatever.  If it becomes decidingly boring, beat the brush, albeit in a methodical manner...nothing will get the heart going quicker than jumping a deer in the woods!

I hear some guys talk it's about the experience and they need to learn that. After my 5 daughters and several other kids I've taken out the one thing that keeps them coming back is a notched tag. New hunters tend to quit one move on if they keep going out hunting and don't get something.
