Rod reel Combo for the Kenai
« on: January 18, 2009, 07:07:48 PM »
I got a 8'6" med/heavy Ugly Stik with a new level wind for fishing the Kenai. I will go going up this summer for a few weeks and was wondering what pound test would you recommend for silvers and Reds? Thanks

I had the great opportunity to fish the zoo a couple of years back. I brought up the same ugly stick you have and a quantum level wind loaded with 20lb. test. I used that rod for about 10 minutes before I grabbed one of my buddys extra Kenai specials with charter special reel loaded with 40lb test. They kept snapping the 20lb test like it was nothing. once they get out in the main current of the river, bye bye. Those reds will flat get it when you hook them. We were there to fill the fish boxes and not screw around.  We were fishing with a guid during the day for kings and evening we were fishing sockeye at a buddy's house on the river. We had a 6 sockeye limit while we were there. I would shoot for something heavier than lighter.

Yes - your absolutely right if your in the "Combat" zone - go big or go home braided Dacron in 35-50lb range with a heavy action rod, but I thought he was going for fun..........  Meat runs are normally associated for the residents, I mean with the cost of going up on a plane, renting a car, staying at a hotel to fish in the Combat fishery is a waste of money for that crazy experience....  Spend a couple extra bucks and get out to one of the remote systems, you'll never ever fish a combat zone again, well maybe.... And you'll normally get a quality guide, an incredible time and tons of fish....  I only have the med/light rods and Abu Garcia 6001's or my 7-8# fly rod and rarely lost a fish with that system using 17lbs....  Trick is not letting them spool you before they get out in the current... Find a spot along the upper river and fish the way fishing is supposed to be-FUN.....  Stay on the shore and look for the green/blue water meeting the murky gray/green water the fish (Reds) will follow that line everytime....  Too many people try to wade out and the fish are right behind them 90% of the time.  Used to walk the river and spot catch fish (Polarized Glasses) from behind people all the time....  To fun when you start targeting certain fish.... I would also sit and wait for some to catch their limits after a long time then pop in when they are leaving and catch two or three while their trudging up the embankment....

But if your strictly after aka "meat" then get a 2 x 4 and attach a 12 foot section of 100lbs halibut line, put on a 6 ounce sinker 18 inches above a legal hook with one thread of any color on it and start flipping, oh don't forget to yank hard on your follow through, you'll get your fish and won't lose any but what fun is that and to boot AST will nail you big time for snagging, use to go with my bud when he did under cover trips, first thing he did was look to see who had the meat rods and who was flipping aimlessly........ oh yea for got to mention, get really, really drunk, cut people off, change your clothes after your first limit and maybe speak alittle German or Russian, brag about where your buddy hooked you in the chest with his hook or forehead for that matter... all while carrying a big freaking gun....   Besides, think of all the friendships you'll develop along the way... Ahhhhhhh what do I know, I only lived, ate and breathed Reds and Coho's for 10 years.........  I'm out of here, a couple beers and I'm rambling on forever....

Thanks for the info. Anyone ever use spider wire type lines. I have using a reel that weighs 24oz. I like a 200 or 300 series reel. With a 200 series I can put 200+ yards of 30lb 8 lb diameter spider wire. How much line do you think you need in your reel for that fishery?

It all depends on where you are going to be fishing.  If you are fishing some private property on the lower river you don't need more than a 7 - 8 wt or 17lb line.  You will have plenty of room to fight the fish.  If you are fishing any of the combat zones please fish with heavier line.  When you get guys that are fighting fish on too light of gear you get in everyones way.  25lb to 30 lb line on a medium heavy to a heavy rod.  I would highly recommend against fishing with any braided line.  If you do, the tangles you will get with ohter people will upset all involved.  If you are combat fishing use heavy mono.  Long leaders and just enough weight to just tick the bottom every couple of feet is perfect.  Hope this helps

Don't think I've ever tried casting 25-30 lb test  :chuckle: How far do I have to cast.  :dunno: What kind of line capacity does your reel need with that heavy of line. I'm assuming your just yarding them in. I feel like a rookie.  :chuckle:

you really don't need to cast very far.  You are more flipping about 15 ft out.  Not very far.  A good ambassadeur 6000 or a 6500 should be just fine.  A good setup for reds and silvers is a medium heavy Berkley IM7 Buzz Ramsy rod 8'6" or 9' rod.  Then put an ambassadeur 6000 or 6500 on it.  Spool it with 25 lb makima and you will be in the game.
Hope this helps
