Call Recommendations

I've been blowing a Primos Original Wench double reed for the last 5 years.  Although it works well for me, I think I want to get a new call.

Any recommendations?  What differences are there in blowing a single reed vice a double reed?

I really like echo. I have a meat hanger and a wood/poly timber and I like them both. Both of mine are double reeds.

I think everyone will have an opinion what the best ones are. I really like pacific calls but that might because I can walk into their shop and have them tune one up for me. I have a single and double reed on my lanyard. I like having both because they both sound a little different and I can feed cackle a little better with the single reed. I think the best recommendation is try to find a friend or store that has a lot of different calls and try as many as you can.

Thes best hunters I know use double reeds. The competition callers use single.  My favorite cheep call is the primos timber wench. I recently got a rnt sweet meat I really like. Buddy got a buck gardner double nasty. All double reeds. I have a jj lairs single. I love it but it require more practice to stay good and you dont blow a single the same way as a double making it hard to switch back and forth without tons of practice.
One member here stacks ducks like cordwood and only uses doubles. Knowing how to call and what to do when the ducks are working is more important than the kind of call.
I love the timberwench for price and ease to use. I love the sweet meat because you cant over blow the call.  Some calls are easier to chuckle, some ring really loud and some make great soft sounds. How you call will help determine what call is a good fit.

You've just started a big adventure. First question what is your max budget. For $100 you can get a custom call made for you. There are lots of jaw drpping stabilized woods out there now. I mean 99 percent of hunters have no clue this stuff is out there. If you have Facebook go over to Call nutz. It's a closed page but they'll accept your request. Take a few days and drool on the insider material on there. Theres ond guy trying to get slme pre orders for a Haydels DR 85 out of linen micarta. Dream a call and these guys can make it. I've had 3 made in the last 2 months.  A Rooster Galloway, Mark Richards,  and Rob Zutttermiester.  Each call  was less than 100.

Thanks for the intel guys.  Might do a little more research on the stuff you've recommended, stop by Cabelas or something, and try some out.

I have a few of these and they are easy to use.  Along with the Sean Mann flute.  If your into easy to use short reeds than the easiest I have found is Foiles Migrators "Strait Meat" honker.  Very forgiving call, even if his past fans weren't.

I use this one sometimes too.  Geese hear short reeds all the way down the flyway.  The flute gives them something different.
Like Special T says, easy to learn to blow and reasonable.

When I started out hunting with my calling mentor all I did was soft quacks and honks when we were hunting letting him do all the real calling because he understood how to read the birds. As I got better at calling and reading the birds we would use calling sequences working together so that I could follow his lead.

Straight meat honker Foiles call is by far the easiest goose call I have blown and the only goose call on my lanyard. For duck calls just try a bunch out and see what you like.
