New Mexico
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:24:41 AM »
I'm in the early planning phases of either an Arizona or New Mexico coues deer hunt for 2017/2018(January of '18 most likely), I have a question for you guys that apply and hunt down there. If I'm understanding this correctly all you need is the deer license(either quality or standard) and you don't have to purchase a general hunting license in addition? I see that a habitat stamp is needed for public land but I'm just trying to figure out how many pennies I need to pinch to make this happen. If the standard deer license of $283 and $5 habitat stamp is all a guy needs to purchase seems like New Mexico is the no brainier as Arizona looks to be about $460 for an otc archery deer tag and license. Thanks in advance guys

One other question regarding New Mexico, can you apply for both rifle and archery tags on the same application? And can you apply for high demand/quality hunts and standard hunts on the same app?

Both states require you to buy a license in order to apply.  New Mexico gives you a box to check to get a refund of the license cost if you don't draw. Arizona does not and you are out that $.  And, yes, you can put in for a rifle hunt as your first and a bow hunt as your second choice.

Yea I realized I was mistaken a while after I posted. Still seems like license and tags are cheaper in New Mexico in general just gotta decide if I can have the quality of coues deer hunting there that I would in Arizona. Any input?

I live in Arizona. If you bow hunt, you'll love it. Tags are OTC for archery during the rut. You get almost three months a year to hunt with your tag.

Speaking of Javelina, I'm about to go out and put my buddy on a herd so he can kill one. I've never had a desire to hunt those things  :chuckle:

Yea I was originally thinking Arizona all the way because of the OTC archery. I don't like playing points/draw games. But it would appear I could potentially apply for some higher quality rifle tags in New Mexico and still put an archery tag as 3rd choice and pretty much be 100% guaranteed to draw so it got me thinking
