Quality bull special permits
« on: March 10, 2016, 01:38:54 PM »
I shot my first elk last year a cow in the untanum unit and aftet many yeats of ghost points I will have 10 quality bull points this year. I am not really looking for the huge trophy just want to get decent bull if I get drawn. Just wondering where you would recommend for a decent chance at a decent bull. I've hunted all over the state just not for elk all that much and want to give it a serious shot.

I have hunted in about half the units in WA, and I wouldn't see any problem getting a bull. If you know anything about hunting and shooting and get drawn for a quality tag. I know others would disagree.

Rifle, archery or ML? do you want a serious shot of drawing a tag? Two things I would do.

1) Study this http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,148317.msg1967983.html#msg1967983 You will get an idea of what your draw odds are per permit

2) Compare your draw odds to success odds http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2014/reports/elk_hunt_name.php

10 points for quality elk permits in this state is a good start but you could be waiting a while... Im in the same boat.

Modern firearm and I know it's not a guaranteed draw but hey I got my moose last year with 4 points. Whether I get drawn or not I still need to pick units to go for.

It's all luck!  Some good units were mentioned with what you want to get out of the hunt, I drew a bull tag with 10 points last year and was surprised for sure.  You just never know.

Unless you are in top knotch perfect shape don't put in for "Watershed", not even ad a secondary choice.  That hell hole will kick your ass.

:yeah: unless you have horses and come in from the bottom, but even then it's work. And that later season could make the fog and weather a major problem.

Look for the units with the least amount of roads. By rifle season the bigger bulls are pretty much brushed up and by their self's. So either hope for snow or think steep and deep. Good luck on the draw.
