I live next door to NM and I stopped putting in a few years ago. 6% of the whole pool of tags and have to pay all up front? Sounds like a great waste of $20 to me. Id rather waste money on the lottery. Seriously.

Yeah, I took a year off too after they changed the allocation.  But at the end of the day, the actual cost isn't that much, and you can't win if you don't play.

Nice bull.

Its tempting. I'm only 3 hours from the Gila monsters. It takes twice  that to get to the Kaibab plateau  :bash:

Wow.  Those 3rds are huge.

Seriously, they both went right at 23".  The swords were slightly shorter, like 22 4/8.

To be clear, that's not my bull (cousin in AZ), I just took the pics and hauled it out.

Fun story, my cousin and I chased these elk (100+, several groups in same vicinity) from slightly different angles, and I got there just in time to watch him range, draw and fire.  I never saw this bull. My cousin was concerned about the shot and wanted to give it some time, so I kept hunting.   I followed/chased the herd(s) after that and had several bulls within 10-60 yards, but no shots.  But pretty much the coolest two hours of elk hunting I've ever had.  At some point my cousin called me on the radio with "bull down, you better get over here", and this was what I saw as I walked up.
