anyone here raise chukar?

I have three chukar that a friend gave me. I'm hoping to get them to reproduce, if all else fails I will use them for dog training and then just get homing pigeons for dog training.

I just like the look of chukar better then pigeons. My wife had said in the past that she wanted a pet bird so I figured she gets what she wants and I get birds for dog training.

You got that dead wrong for western WA.  Bobs and pheasant are pretty easy, but chukar don't like the wet.  If you raise them off the ground on wire floors they do pretty well.  Don't forget you're supposed to have a game farm license.

I have them off the ground. I will have to look into the small game farm license.

I have raised all three mentioned and found chukar to be the easiest. No need for peepers (pheasant) and a much better flying bird than bobs. I didn't have mine off the ground but gave them limbs to get off if they wanted. Have fun.

Easy,and I had them on the ground,it was very well drained straight sand that's about 10 foot deep there. I also had put hog fuel down. Raised a couple thousand no problem. Never had a license and would never get one,this state is stoopid.

We raise pheasants and chuckar. Quail are by far the hardest birds to raise in my opinion! Suicidal!

Maverick quail are actually easy to raise also, I bet I raised 10 thousand. There are some tricks to it a radio playing is one,a garden hose in the water er is another,big radius corners in the brooder area,salt in the water, multiple heat lamps on 2 circus and batches/ brooders that hold 150 chick's per. I had bad luck if I tried more than 150 in a pen/ brooding area. The biggest tip is to fill buckets with water and let it warm to ambient temperature before using in the waterer. A single chicken drinks and gets cold,peeps and his brothers/sisters all pile on top to help warm him up. I had a ten foot round cattle trough with a 1/4 inch plywood top,8 heat lamps,four access doors and two 4 foot fluorescent light fixtures with 4 lamps each in the center on a pulley system for height adjustment.

Chicks have never been the issue. The older birds drowned on the tiniest of water at times and disease always seems to be an issue.
