I think they do cross, but I'm not sure of this one was a cross or not. Body size wasn't humongous like an elk.

I think they do cross, but I'm not sure of this one was a cross or not. Body size wasn't humongous like an elk.

I always thought most of the stags in New Zealand are crossed.  I remember reading information at the YO Ranch in Texas that "Red Stag" means it is a cross whereas Red Deer Stag is the pure species.  Sika/Red cross would be a "Silk Stag? 

I was offered a hunt in Argentina some years ago and their big selling point was that the stags there were "Pure" Red Deer and claimed they were one of the few places left to find them in huntable numbers.

That's interesting, I was just going off the style of fronts bull blasters stag but after looking at a couple hundred other stags (google) its not really something to make note of.....it's amazing how unique these animals are, everyone has its own "look"....can't wait to get over there someday

They do cross but early on it's only a one way cross like a horse and a donkey. A stag can breed a cow elk and have a live calf. However if a bull breeds a hind. The fetus is to big for the hind to carry and they will abort is my understanding.

The stuff you see on his stag is very typical for stags.

NZ has been on the dream radar for quite awhile now and then I go and see all these great photos and that stag ............... I gotta get past dreaming and get over there pronto. Congrats on the marriage and the hunt!
