FN Five Seven

Does anyone own one or have experience shooting one?  I'm curious about how heavy it is.  I know the gun itself is lightweight, but with a 20 round clip, I imagine it would get heavy.  The 5.7x28mm round seems pretty awesome, especially the range that it gives.

Very lightweight with the 20 rd mags, and still very light with the extended 30's. Weight is definately not an issue with this gun.

Nope, fully loaded they aren't very heavy at all.  But, they are LOUD!!!  I have a PMR30 and it has a very nasty sharp loud crack and I think the FN 5.7 is a little louder.  Very fun gun to shoot and with those big magazines you can really go through the ammo fast but you'll want to use good hearing protection when you shoot it.

Would you consider this a good backpacker option?  I know the logic behind a lightweight, high caliber revolver, but if I can get away with packing 20+ rifle rounds around in a semi-auto pistol at about the same weight and with the ability to reach out and touch something at 100 yards, I know what I would want strapped on my hip during archery season.  I currently pack a compact 40 bersa thunder...and I can feel the weight.

Bears...cougars...wolves...anything that I'm further down the food chain with.  I know I'm carrying a bow, but last year I was on the peninsula in the rain and made the mistake of leaving my pistol in the truck.  4 miles later and colder, I found myself in a stare down with a bear at 30 yards...me at full draw and him on his hind legs...really wish I had a bit more teeth than the single nocked broadhead.  Cooler minds prevailed and he walked (didn't have a bear tag last year, a mistake I won't make this year).  The round is traveling pretty hot at 2100+fps.  Is it a question of penetration?

It has roughly the same muzzle energy as a 9mm. It was made for urban combat, and I'm sure it's great for that, in addition to being just plain cool. But if I had to kill an attacking bear, and I had the choice, I'd pick something with a bit more thump.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with magnanimous.  The 5.7 shoots a pretty small bullet really fast and that tends to equate to over penetration without creating a good wound channel.  That's why they outlawed some of the early ammo for the 5.7x28 because they were shooting through kevlar vests.

Maybe take a look at a Glock 31.  Empty it weighs the same as the FN five seven and 16 rounds of 357 Sig is a whole lot of fire power.


Ammo is usually pretty easily available for the 5.7

LOL  Ya, I've got a 4in S&W 500 that I joke about being my primary CCW, not because of it's firepower but the thing is huge and I probably stand a better chance of using it as a club than I would drawing it and hitting what I'd be shooting at.  At least I could use it one handed as a club because I sure as he11 wouldn't want to attempt shooting it one handed.

Also, a Glock 31 Gen4 would only cost you half as much as a FN Five Seven.  I bought a new Sig 229 357 Sig when they first came out and it's been one of my all time favorites of any gun I've owned.

Look into the glock 20 10mm. 15+1 and 10mm has more power then 45acp
