If you see any thinning operations look for fresh cuts and piles.  They love to eat the tops of trees just fallen.  Rut should be starting anytime and with some weather/barometer change it should be getting good soon.  Winchester and front side of Calispell peak have always been good to me.

We saw more when we cow called and grunted. Get up high on calispell and try calling down over the valleys. Worked great for me.

The moose tend to show themselves more on cloudy days, so the weather is looking better for moose hunting.  Keep covering the ground and you'll find them.  North Fork of Calispell Creek and Winchester Creek are good places to look too.
plowed mine back in '06 off winchester creek road at around MP 13 opening evening.  he was following 2 cows. 4 1/2 years old and had a 43 1/2" spread.  good enough for me and was the best eating animal i've shot--not tough at all

Lingking, we are giving it a heck of a go. Not finding much, we ve been calling and covering most of the areas recommend, it's not over yet. But it's been tough.

They'll open up for you shortly.  Most are cowed up, and they'll spend a couple days with them.  They won't talk much.  As soon as they've done their thing they'll be back on the beat.   Patience! Rut isn't near over.  Just a cycle.

Persistence will pay off. It will happen for you guys when ya least expect it. Even though its stressful, enjoy every minute of it before you join all of us in the former moose tag holders club. :chuckle:

Update, my time with the hunter is over but my dad and John the hunter are staying at it. While I'm back home on the west side and back to work they will hopefully give me updates. On a regular basis. Again thanks to all the members who gave us advice, the  last moose spotted was two days ago a small bull running down the road into the thick stuff. I know it will happen but it was not at all what I expected, rain and wind the last two days I think is keeping them held up as well. See ya soon, fingers crossed! Blindluck

To any locals and prior moose hunters, any tips and info would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance. You can pm me. The work starts now!
well, after 16 days the first 6 pre season scouting John decided to take the next moose that presented a shot. It was challenging but exciting. We met some great fellow moose hunters and learned some new areas. We especially want to thank cascade and wazzu99 who kept us informed when there were moose sightings. In the end the snow flew and a nice cow hit the ground.
