Chiwawa quality rifle tag
« on: June 11, 2016, 12:32:47 PM »
Finally got a good deer tag.  Can't wait.  Anybody have any pictures of bucks they have shot in the chiwawa? I'm stoked.

Lots of nice bucks come out of the unit but unfortunately it had brushed over pretty good recently. Do your homework and you should come out successful.

A search on here should show you plenty of bucks.  Congrats on the draw

There aren't any deer in the chiwawa. :chuckle:. Kidding. You should have a great hunt. I would focus on the last week of the season. Pray for snow to get the big boys moving.

Chiwawa is my favorite unit and you will do well even if we don't get a big early snow.  There are a number of Chiwawa bucks posted on this forum.
Don't worry about the quality of the bucks available.  Your biggest problem will be keeping your finger off the trigger until the one you want to take home steps out.
So often permit hunters shoot a 140 pt buck when their goal was +150; there are 170s and higher if you really want to work at it and have the time.

I'm not suggesting a 140" buck is unworthy, but that scenario is not reserved for Chiwawa, it's unit wide in my life experience. :twocents:

Careful with the later part of the season. Don't know of a unit more weather dependant. Snow can get deep and access to areas can become very limited. Have had the tag twice and been on a total of 5 late hunts over there. It is NOT a guaranteed hunt. Can be easy first day success or settle for a lesser buck, or eat the tag. You still have to work for it. Luck and persistence will pay off. Enjoy it..

My dad got this tag too, crossing fingers we end up with a decent deer....He is 78 and still gets around good but those hills are getting steeper.

Here's one from regular season.
