Any controlled expansion bullet of appropriate weight will do from either gun.  You should choose the one that's shooting most accurate for you.  They will both do fine and there is not much difference between them.

Don't have real life on elk yet but I am shooting the 150 LRAB out of my .270 and wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk..

For the .270 I'd use a 150gr nosler partition

With a 30/06 i use 150g Barnes TTSX. Great speed (2970 fps) and great performance. I've taken bear, elk, whitetail, and coyote all with this round.

Double lunged my first elk and he went less than 10 yards. However MOST North American animals double lunged with a 150g bullet will go down. Whatever shoots well will kill the elk.

Accubonds, Partitions, TTSX would be my first choices

If you don't reload, head to Walmart and buy a box of 30-06 and sight it in.  You really can't buy a box of that caliber that hasn't downed tens of thousands of animals.  I would buy the core lokt, but the others will work just fine.

For reloading, I use the tsx between 165 and 180 that shoots the best.

Whichever your son shoots best. Both will do just fine

I do not reload. I will have him target practicing with cheaper bullets and then try out some of the mentioned brands.

.270 winchester super x 150 grain box ammo.  I have never owned a .270 that would not shoot this ammo with excellent accuracy and tremendous knock down power.  Don't spend a ton of money when this has been proven ammo for decades.

There was this kinda  famous guy that killed just about everything in north America with a .270.  His favorite load was 62 grains of H4831 with just about any 130gr bullet.  The .270 is pretty hard top beat.  But on the other hand so is the 30-06.

That same guy also killed lots with an 06 and privately noted that the 06 was better.

Which ever rifle your son shoots the best is the one for him. I like to shoot somthing with a bit more snort myself, but both of those rounds with well placed shots are plenty for most of the largest big game animals in North America. I watched my dad kill just about anything you would want to kill with an 30.06 180 grain core lokt bullet

My 270 flings the nosler, no matter what I do to it in handloading. But the Accubonds are spot on out to 500 yards. Given no wind. Also have great luck with Speer grand slams, and Sierra game kings. Anything in the 140 to 150 range.

Shoot and take both along, never know what is going to happen.  How is the fit and weight on the two?  Can not go wrong either way

All of the 30-06's I have shot have loved 165 grain bullets of pretty much any manufacture, 180's not so much. I don't do .270 so no input there.
