Multiple lengths of line for crab pots?

I hate to drop 250' of line when I need far less for a pot. I was thinking of making up lines of several lengths to connect them as I need them. This would also be useful for my ring (I usually fish both at a time). Right now I have multiple lines and it's a pain.

I don't really want to do loops as I'd rather have something I can easily adjust as I move around my crabbing grounds. Snaps concern me because they could "catch" another line or something else on the way up.

Any thoughts on "adjustable" length lines for crabbing?

I wanted to do the same thing.  I ended up braiding loops back in each end of my sections.  Large loop on one side, small on the other.  That way you can just grab a new section of line and pass it through the large loop without unwinding it and pulling through by hand.  Someone else might have another way that suits your needs better, but that works fine for me even changing while I am out and moving around to find crab.

I have multiple lengths, from 33' to 100'.  They are all in a bin that I throw in the boat, then just use what best fits the depth.  They are labeled with duct tape labels for the length, and have halibut clips on both ends in case I need to string multiples together for deeper water.

I use weighted line on  v boards with a half hitch to adjust the depth.

I ended up using 1", stainless, locking carabiners for the lengths. So far, so good. I also use them to connect to the harnesses on the pots. They are smooth and shouldn't snag but can't be opened unless you rotate the locking collar.

I use 50 foot and 100 foot shots of line. Easy to manage and customize to whatever length you need. I use c-links to connect them and on all my pots and floats.  Easy, quick, and will go through a lot puller without fouling.  For the loop I just crimp on 2-3 hog rings.





To keep the shots organized I use bunge loops, they're cheap on Amazon.

Those C-links are cool.  It only takes about fifteen minutes to learn how to braid a loop in the end of crab line, get rid of those rusty hog rings....

I didn't think of the C-links - and I should have. I'm getting old. That's a great idea. Fast and reliable.

I definitely braid my loops now. If you use a fid it is quick and easy.

Yeah, I usually back braid all my loops, but leaded line is a PITA!  So rusty hog rings it is for me

This is a FAB idea! Just one problem, when I type in C -clips, into google all I get are snap ring style c-clips? Do they go by another name?
