City of Chehalis employee Don Schmitt has won the 2016 Centralia College Foundation’s Elk Hunt Raffle drawing. Don will have the opportunity to hunt on TransAlta land for a single bull elk, three-point minimum, during the upcoming modern rifle hunting season.
The winning ticket was drawn Monday at the Centralia College Foundation office. A total of 220 tickets were sold garnering $5,500 to be split between a 2017-18 scholarship and the Dave Sherwood Memorial Endowment.
Since 2012, nearly $40,000 has been raised through the Dave Sherwood Memorial Elk Hunt Raffle.
The raffle honors TransAlta employee Dave Sherwood, who died while hunting elk in east Lewis County in 2012. TransAlta wanted to do something to remember Dave and his love for hunting; it offered the annual Elk Hunt Raffle to the Centralia College Foundation to raise money for scholarships.
“I am grateful that so many students will benefit from the proceeds in his memory,” said Sue Sherwood, Dave’s wife.
The raffles have been so successful that a Dave Sherwood Endowment was created to ensure a sustainable source of scholarships for the college.
