Hello, and my 08 buck
« on: February 08, 2009, 12:36:44 PM »
Hi ive been lurking and reading for a while now but my computer was such a POS I didnt really enjoy being on it, also i couldnt post pics. Now I have a new PCso here goes..My 08 season started packed in up high in the Teanaway. I spent a whole week in a wall tent with no luck. My two partners scored decent bucks but I came out empty handed. My plan b was to hunt the late west side hunt so I chose an area to hike behind a closed gate. When I got to the gate in the morning there was only one truck there. I parked took my last drink of coffee and started putting on my pack as I stepped out of my truck in the darkness I looked up and saw a shooting star O.k. I believe in a little luck so I felt pretty good. I spoke with the other hunter asking him where he was headed, he wasnt going as far as me so I decided to go ahead of him. As I hiked in it was slowly getting light. I started glassing about every 20 steps or so. As I approached the clearcut I was heading to I slowed down and crept into the cut glassing about every 5 steps. I saw another hunter on a mtn bike riding the road along the cut. He glassed down in at one point and then left. I decided to continue along the road past where Id seen the other hunter. As I crept along a buck jumped out of the clearcut to my left taking 3 big hops across the road and dissapearing into the other side which was thick reprod. I froze for a few minutes and continued on. As I rounded the bend I came to a spot in the road where two bucks had a massive fight, the road was torn up with hoof prints and antler scrapes. I stopped right there and pulled out the doe urine putting some on a cotton ball and setting it in the branch of a small alder. There was a skid road to my left I decided to slowly creep down. I got about 30 yds down the road and glassed a buck on the hillside to my right when I pulled up my rifle and looked through my scope he was gone. About a half a minute later here comes a doe trucking through the clearcut..I knew what was coming next. As quick as I saw the doe there he was ears out head down nose sticking straight out after the doe. I quickly pulled up and shot as he was moving steadily. Back in the scope all I saw were hooves in the air, I was only about 60 yds away so my 7mm upended him. 162 grain hornadys if you care to know. As I approached him he stunk bad from ruttin, he had battle scars including a small puncture in the nose from fighting. Victory is short when your by yourself and 2 miles from your truck so I quickly got started. Another hunter came by and snapped these photos for me otherwise I would have none. I quarteered him and headed out with two qtrs and the head. Along the way I met a timber company employee working on the road as luck would have it he let me drive in to get the rest of the deer. At the butcher he weighed 130# not bad. -DSP-
