I need help setting up for digiscoping
« on: August 26, 2016, 11:55:50 PM »
Got the Vortex Razor adapter yesterday and am looking at a Nikon D 3200 w/50 1.8G.  Yes/no?  and why.

I have $15K invested in Nikon & Bronica film cameras that I have not touched since the kids were born.   I don't want a "professional" quality experience that has a long and steep learning curve.   Been there and done that.

I want advanced amateur quality ability to take long distance photos & video of big game animals in the wild through my Razor 85 PERIOD.

Am I on the right track????

I have the 85 also and the 3200 and have debated getting the adapter for it....I have an adapter for my phone that I use all the time right now for ease of use...but I'm curious also about the quality of the setup...this video was taken with my phone and razor 85 with a crappy tripod hence the rough panning...I have a better tripod now...it's a decent quality video so using a DSLR has got to be much better

I'd skip  all the DLSR crap if you want to avoid the learning curve. There's little comparative benefit to having a DSLR over a cell phone or p-n-s when digiscoping. Just look at deerhunters photo above. There's so much compression at these distances and magnification that a DSLRs strengths such as shadow recovery and depth of field control are pretty much useless. Then there's the headache of packing it around all the time.

Get a pocket camera point-and-shoot that has a macro ability to focus on your spotters eyepiece adapter. For digiscoping purposes the primary determinant of image quality will be the ED/ULD/HD elements in your spotting scope, not any trivial crap in a bulky, klugey camera. Your lens forms your image.
