MudFlow Elk Unit 5099 Success *Updated with Pics*
« on: November 15, 2016, 07:05:49 AM »
My 14 year old son has drawn a Youth Mudflow Bull tag that starts next week, and I was wondering if anyone has had success this year in that unit. I live close to the unit and am familiar with it so I'm not looking for spots. Hopefully anybody that has had success can share pictures and a quick story that I can show him to get him even more excited for the hunt. Also if there are other people on here that have the other two tags send me a PM and we can exchange numbers so hopefully we can get all 3 of the youth tags filled.

Here is an archery Bull my hunting partner killed in 2009. Great hunt! I hope he is stoked for the hunt, it should be alot of fun. I know one of the permit holders, I will try to pass along this post. Good luck and have a great time!

That's a dandy bull, hopefully we find something of that caliber.

There are LOTS of bulls up in there.  I was in there helping someone on the Archery tag and we were in them every day.  Can't offer much help though as that was early Sept, they have all moved areas by now and area we hunted was steep with no real rifle distance shooting lanes.  Not an area I would take a youth, unless they are conditioned to handle the climbing.

I did see some pictures on Hunting-Washington Facebook forum of someone that took a nice bull down on the flats of the flow with rifle last week.  Looked like really good terrain for a youth hunt, but I have no idea on how to access it.  Probably requires a Weyerhauser permit?  I would get in there ASAP and start glassing/scouting so you have an idea where they are right now before the hunt starts.

Good luck to you, let us know how it goes!

That is a nice bull, hopefully we can find one that big. In the picture it looks like that was down in the valley, how much snow was up above last year? I am sure the area with the bulls will be will dependent on the snow at the time. My son climbed Mt St Helens with me last year so he should have no problem walking the hills with me.

It was in the valley opening morning we had about an inch of snow in the valley went away the next day or so. You should have no problem getting a nice bull scout and know what is there we passed some great bulls to get this guy!

Well after a few days of hiking and glassing a lot of bulls, my son was able to take his first elk. He also learned what it was like to pack an elk over 4 miles to the truck. This was a great learning experience for him.
