Opinions please, I have a bubba'd 1903 Springfield
« on: December 21, 2016, 05:23:08 PM »
and I was thinking a 400 Whelen(Petrov) would be fun, some background on the 1903; cut down stock, rear sight missing and rear sight base ground smooth, williams peep sight installed, barrel matches receiver, it is a post WWI rifle, bore is good.

Anyway just wanted to get some opinions before I make up my mind.

Thanks

That little shoulder gives me the creeps, but it's been around for years with no issues.

35 Whelen in a 1903 is a classic sporter too.

If you have not already, make sure the receiver is not one of the weak, potentially dangerous ones.

A little background info on them:

There were some cast commercial receivers done post war and those are a little questionable but are easy to ID. The other failures I always thought were suspect and over hyped.

Thanks for the info, That was one of the things I checked prior to buying the rifle.

Whole lotta work to get a 1903 to feed that fat case and I'd rather burn Savage barrels out than 1903's alot less work to swap em

308 Norma mag?  .35 Whelen would be sweet, too.

I have a Win 1917 that will someday hopefully see a .404 Jeffery barrel

P14 were designed to feed rimmed cartridges.(303) P17's can take pretty much whatever you throw at them. Dad and I have done .375 and .450 Ackley Magnums on them.

I would like to thank everybody that chimed in, some great ideas and nobody seems to think I am desecrating an Icon by converting it.

Only if it's as issued. In addition to a couple "as issued" rifles I also have two that were sporterized by the previous owner.  One is an excellent shooter.

Well I talked to Jesse at JES reboring and he says that he doesn't do the 400 Whelen so that leaves either the 35 or 375 Whelen. either way I will be sending my rifle to him soonest.
