Hunted for years on state forest ground in Utah. Area had thousands of acres of old growth quaken aspen groves that provided year around habitat for good herds of both deer and elk and also was a major migratory area for the animals higher up. Family took a lot of both deer and elk from the area. State then decided (despite objections from game managers) to log the quakies in the area. Within two years they had completely clear cut every quakie in the area, and I mean completely clear cut. Areas that once were pristine groves of old growth and home to great numbers of big game are now huge gouges of clear cut open space with a few stumps and completely void of anything other than squirrels. When asked about it, we were told the mandate was to maximize profit from state lands and these quakies were more profitable to the state when cut and ground up to be used to make furnace filters. Provided several local jobs for the two years it took to denude the area. This is not an isolated incident in the state, short term profits over ride long term game management everytime. It's not just selling off the land that is a problem.
