Why??

Spoke with a WDFW officer this week regarding the presence of a non-aiding dog during the harvest of a bear.

Apparently it's just as illegal to kill a bear with a Golden Retriever at your side as it is to use a pack of trained hounds.

Where do they come up with these rules? Seems like it'd be a pretty easy judgement call on if a guy was using his dog as an aid or not.

I figure if I'm in a wilderness area trout fishing in August, my dog is going to be there, and I see a lot of bears. Might as well start packing the rifle, but apparentl that's unlawful....

This state is a dumpster fire at times haha.

Can't you get the dog to be an emotional support dog?  Then you have handicap laws on your side.  You can get it designated for certain issues like anxiety, detachment, depression.  If dog's can roam the grocery store and sniff everything on the lower shelves, might as well take them bear hunting too.

Well the WDFW will assume your dog would be for hunting in one way shape or form. Can't bend the rules unless like said above, unless proven as a emotional support/disability worker dog. If they bend the rule just because of the breed or you say you'll keep it by your side will make others say they have 1+ hounds with them.

Can't you get the dog to be an emotional support dog?  Then you have handicap laws on your side.  You can get it designated for certain issues like anxiety, detachment, depression.  If dog's can roam the grocery store and sniff everything on the lower shelves, might as well take them bear hunting too.

I'll claim that I suffer from anxiety related to not being able to hunt with my dog....so I got a dog to be a service dog so that I could hunt with a dog LOL

Like what WDFW officer in their right mind is going to think that my duck dog and hiking buddy played any sort of role in killing or tracking a bear haha.

The WDFW constantly blows my mind.

I personally think they should shut that department down and give it to the state police. Same way Oregon does it. hell you read about more poachers being caught in a week, then Washington catches in a year. Mostly cause they don't have a department full of clowns fighting over who gets the animal planet camera guy to ride with them.

3 or 4 years ago, me and the lab were grouse hunting and he ran a bear up a tree.  I had a bear tag, had a slug, but didn't shoot because I didn't want to break a law.  It also wasn't a very big bear and I didn't know if a sow was close.

Emotional support dogs technically are not protected class of service dogs. Nor are therapy dogs.  I know as I am researching service dogs requirements for Ada access.  All those emotional support dogs that you see are technically violating the rules, unless they perform specific service like picking up dropped things for someone in say a wheelchair. 

This does make me wonder however if a service dog in the act of working would fall under those guidelines.  I wonder if you would have to be a disable hunter and I wonder what qualifies.  I am avoiding that label like the plague for reasons, but I do wonder.
