Rebarrel input
« on: March 06, 2017, 04:33:37 PM »
I'm thinking about rebarreling an older Model 70 I have. It is currently in 30-06. I have 3 other 30-06s I use and this one is a safe queen. So I got a long action rifle that needs a new pipe. I'm not sure if I want to go bigger or smaller. current options are 6.5x284, 30 Gibbs(but I got a 300WM), 9.3x62, 6mm-06, 280AI. I could use some more ideas.

If you have a need for a smaller caliber I'd just go with a 25/06.

280 ai would be my personal choice. I have always like the round just never had one built.

Wouldn't it save money to sell the gun you have and buy what you want?

338-06 or 35 Whelen.  Both great rounds that make good use of the 06 case

Decide what you want to do with it first. Lr? Thumper? Then decide the chambering.
I love my 6.5-284, i also think the 6.5-06 ai is awesome and the 35 whelen is always on my want list.

jES reboring could turn that sucker into a 338-06 or 35 whelen without changing barrels for like $225

Perhaps this one has no papers and as such worth the investment. 2c

Another benefit to reboring is that barrel already has the stress shot out of it and that wouldn't change with the reboring process.

I am in process of having my old 30-06 re-bored to 35 Whelen.  So that would get my vote.  JES Reboring is doing the re-bore.  Although I have a gunsmith doing some other work on it as well (stock refinish, etc.).

Have a .280AI improved and love the cartridge and currently have a 6.5-06AI being put together should be done in 5 months or so.  No experience with the 6.5 yet but have heard awesome results from others.  Or do both and get a 6.5-280 AI.

I'll second (or third?) JES. Great service, great price, and amazing turn around time.
