Superfood in your pack?
« on: March 17, 2017, 08:33:22 AM »
Do any of you pack Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wah) backcountry? It's been called the Superfood. I'm not a backcountry hunter but I hiked quite a bit in my younger years and I know a lot about food. If you aren't familiar, quinoa is a grain originally grown in the Andes, but is now also grown in the Rockies. It's fairly high in protein, has a ton of vitamins and minerals. But perhaps most important has all of the necessary amino acids for your diet. You can literally live on it. It needs to be rinsed first before boiling it to get off the sour outer coating off. If you have limited water, this might not be the right food. Once cooked it makes a great dinner grain and you can add sliced onions or other veggies. It's also pretty good as a breakfast hot cereal with a little maple syrup in it. It comes in white, red, and black varieties. I like the red and white the best. They're all fairly similar in nutritional info. Good luck this year!

I'm a big fan of it.
i've pretty much replaced white rice in a lot of my dishes that would usually be with rice with quinoa at home.  although sometimes you just NEED white rice with a good elk stir fry
I have even made fried quinoa with my fried rice recipes and it turns out quite delicious.
I plan on trying to dehydrate some quinoa with some of my dishes this year, which would really cut down on the amount of water/cook time.

I love Quinoa.  I haven't tried packing it but that sure is a good idea.

I love it. It has become a staple on my boat, I switched from jasmine rice to Quinoa in most cases this year. A number of ways to prepare it, but a quick and easy cheat (and backpacker friendly) is to throw some Top Ramen seasoning in with the water.

You can also add quinoa, and other healthy seeds like chia or hemp, into fruit bars. I put figs in a food processor with cacao, chia seeds, dried cranberries, coconut flakes and coconut oil. You can add quinoa to this recipe by rinsing them, then giving them a quick toast in your toaster oven. These bars are pretty idiot proof since you can just add water and coconut oil slowly until the bars are the right consistency. Pour onto plastic wrap, shape it, then wrap it up and stick it in the fridge for a few hours. You can cut it into smaller pieces after its chilled.

This season will be my 1st back country hunt, and these fruit bars will definitely be in the pack.

quinoa or lentels are great. simple to prepare and easy to spruce up. Although I don't hunt with lentals as they tend to make a lot of gas

We've changed our life style and are eating way better, exercising and dropping a lot of weight. Our weekly go to favorite meal is quinoa pizza crust, homemade elk Italian sausage with my smoked mozzarella cheese with vodka sauce. I was skeptical at first but I love the crust now and prefer it. Our second favorite meal is a cup of quinoa cooked with some chicken bouillon with sliced elk keilbasa soaked in hot sauce. Amazing.

We make it ourselves.
Soak 3/4 cup of quinoa in a bowl of water all day.
When ready to cook, drain and rinse.
Put quinoa in a food processor with a tablespoon of baking powder,  1/4 cup of water, some Italian seasoning or oregano and a pinch of salt or any other spices you'd like.
Turn in the food processor and let her run for a few minutes.
It will turn into a pourable mixture, like a cake batter consistency.
We then take a cookie sheet, spray a few burst of Pam on it (to hold parchment paper in place), lay a piece of parchment paper down and then spray the parchment paper. Pour out quinoa and smooth evenly.
425 for 15 minutes. Pull out of oven and flip the quinoa back onto the cookie sheet and throw parchment paper away, be careful. Back in oven for another 5 minutes. Pull out and build pizza how you like, back in oven for a few minutes to heat toppings and melt cheese. It's stupid easy and comes out awesome. When we make it this week I'll take some process pictures to help my explanation. Thinner the better on the crust.

The wife has bought a few of those quinoa packages from costco where you add the water and microwave it. I wonder if this would work somehow for packing in? I'm not familiar with eating quinoa any other way so this is all new to me but I enjoy it, maybe not as much as my white rice but I try to pack nutritious food when packing on overnight somewhere.

Those of you that use quinoa as backpack food. Do you cook it like at home or boil it and dehydrate it first?
