Ive seen those bags on the sawyer minis give out twice in the last year. Just a buyer beware. They work great until that bag gives out. 

You don't need the bag to use it.  You can replace it with a different bottle or just use the straw.

Two of us got by with the sawyer mini for a week in Canada - can't believe we only brought one.    Got the Kaytadyn for camp but the mini still has a place in the daypack.

The Sawyer is great, I have the squeeze, but just be careful that they get damaged if they are frozen.  You may not notice it, but it will burst some of the passages inside and let through untreated water.

I've used the Camelbak All Clear purifier for a couple of years. Works great for me & only takes 60 seconds.

I like the MSR Aquatabs. Granted, you have to wait a few minutes, but that is usually not a problem. I've used numerous filters throughout the years but I typically am places where the water is pretty clear and I don't feel a need to filter and tabs are fine. Really, in most places I frequent, I just pick free running water and don't treat or filter. 

There are a lot of good new filters available but I feel that in most cases water is pretty good and purification is not necessary in the US. It is one of those safety concerns like seat belts, 99.99% of people will not need it but it can suck if you are in the 0.01% that finds it necessary. That said, I recommend purification for most people and do not condone not purifying.

Crypto is pretty ubiquitous throughout the world, but rarely causes issues. Crypto just made news for Portland water. They had a number of detections in 2017 and now have to spend over 100 million on a new treatment facility to treat the cities currently untreated water.

Higher price point but a steri-pen is a good option. Set it for a pint or a quart, let it do its thing inside of the bottle and you are good to go! Takes up a little more room than iodine tablets but no foul taste.

Aquatabs are not iodine but a chlorine like sodium compound (Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate).  They actually off gas fairly quickly from my reading and from experience I find the taste not unpleasant, though slightly chemical. They are not effective on Crypto from what I have most recently read though.

I don't know if there is any science behind it but I have always just collected water wherever it springs out of the ground and called it good. I dont really branch out from my core hunting areas though, I'm sure that's not always an option elsewhere.

I am going up this weekend in NE scouting mule deer, i'm going to try the potable aqua and see how it goes.  I am trying to reduce bulk in my pack so the little pill bottle is appealing.
