Need help with basic repairs. Cadillac Eldorado.
« on: April 27, 2017, 12:35:43 AM »
Guys I'm only gonna plee for help on here before I go make a craigslist post looking for a mechanic that's more than likely going to wind up being a complete stranger. I have a 1985 Cadillac Eldorado that's withering away because I can't get it running. Literally the only problem is it needs a new top/side post battery and it needs a new alternator installed and I'm not mechanically inclinded at all. I bought one new alt for the car. Completely didn't fit correctly, took it back..
Bought an alternative one for my car that's exactly the same BUT it has a pulley for a serpentine belt and not a deep v like I need. So I took the deep v pulley off my primary alt to swap to the new alt..... and while trying to get the pulley off the new alt I think I stripped some threads on the bolt. Bolts off now though but the pulley still will not budge. I'm just tired of dealing with it and I'll gladly pay someone to help me out. Just need to get the old pulley onto the new and installed. Might have to rethread the new alternators pulley post. I have the tools for that just no experience. It's been a pain in my neck for awhile now.. car is rotting away and it's making me sorta depressed. It was my favorite car and my first car. Once it stopped running I gave up and bought a new car. I needa get her running so I can clean her and start enjoying the ride on the weekends... helllpp

Run that alt and pulley down to a good local shop and have them swap it for you, easy job for them. If you were closer id do it for nothing

No need for free labor! Just lookin for help on something I'm pretty inexperienced on. Everytime I touch car parts I screw something up so I just don't do it anymore. Can't afford to learn that way right now.

Depending on what time im done tomorrow I can help out. I live off of vail loop. Or your best bet would be to go into town and one of the auto parts stores may swap the pulleys

I litaralty  have worked  on more of those than anyone in seattle . Oil oil oil and don't run her hard . Engine parts are pretty much non existant. They plug the oil drains around the head bolts then starve for oil . I probably  have parts if you ever need them . Make sure that the smog pump belt is tight since it drives the water pump and alternator.

You should be able to "rent" a pulley puller at AutoZone or shucks, that'll allow you to rip the pully off, your almost there man!

If you were on the dryside I'd offer to help, won't be back over to your for another couple months at this point though.

Damn if you were on this end of the state I'd gladly lend a hand with stuff.

But yeah you can probably borrow a 3 jaw puller from a autoparts store. If anything give it a a soak in some pb blaster just right on the shaft end and make whoever's life easier that's gonna pull it off for you. I don't know if I missed it, but did the threads get messed up on the new alternator? If they did just make sure you chase them clean or at the very least use a small triangle file to clean the threads up. And make sure not to use the nut that got jacked up otherwise it'll just strip out more/again

its just stuck if you stick a allan socket in the shaft and hold it by the pulley and tap the socket it will most likely pop off.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I spent many of the beginning miles of my driving career in that cars Oldsmobile sibling.
