Trout with hooks already in them ?
« on: May 26, 2017, 04:05:38 PM »
Just wondering how many people catch trout with lines hanging out of their mouth. In the last week I have caught 5, 3 of them in one day. Saw another guy just down from me get one on the day I got the 3. A week prior I got a fish, got it in and there was a line wrapped around mine that took off into the lake. A short time latter the guy next to me caught a fish, got it in, and it also had a line wrapped around it. He was able to snag it and pulled in his last fish by hand.
Never seen anything like it. Every thing from a small treble to # 6 egg hooks. I wonder how many broke off at the hook that I didn't see. Some came complete with power eggs, one was dragging 2' of leader with the swivel. Some items have been incorporated into my tackle inventory.
Has anyone else found gear with their fish ?

I have caught a few, the most memorable was a 16" rainbow that had my uncle's fly in its jaw, he had fished through about an hour before me.  He got tired of hearing about what a nice fish it was and the skill required to not get broken off by bigger fish in small streams  :chuckle:.  I caught a 22" rainbow in a Wyoming lake that had a countown Rapala hooked just in front of the dorsal.  A fair number over the years with bare hooks.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Yep 4 times this year for me. Helped an older gentleman land one with a red hook coming out it's vent hole.

Watched a spey guy break off a summer run, only to have him see me catch it four days later with his fly still stuck in it's face.

Very common, I use 6lb test line trout fishing the Mason County lakes and those planters thrash around and when using bait they typically swallow it deep and trash your line. While I try to get the hook out the line breaks.  I started using a treble and the fish don't swallow it that easy and take it in the lip more than swallow the whole thing. Don't tell WDFW that though they would say the opposite.

Let's take this a step farther through the digestive process. ;)

After swallowing a baited hook, it is possible for trout to "process" it and the hook works it's way through the digestive system and out the other end. I have seen several trout over the years with a hook, or at least part of a line dangling from their bunghole. Weird, but not unheard of.

A few years ago we caught a trout that had taken it even farther. It was a nice carryover, maybe 16-17 inches and we killed it. As I was unhooking the fish I noticed another line coming from it's mouth. Ok...not unusual... until I realized the line looped back through the trout's bunghole. Yes- it had a hook in it's gullet attached to a line from it's own southend. How that happened I have no idea. I'm thinking it "passed" the hook and then somehow reingested it. Freaky.

In the mid 90s, I caught a 4 lb rainbow out of Lake Desire in Kent. When I netted him, he had another line coming out of his mouth. I started pulling on the other line, up comes a Eagle Claw telescoping pole with a Okuma spincast with a flipping switch on it, LOL.
I still have it, works great for a pack pole.

That has to be one of the coolest fishing scores I have ever heard.

I almost makes up for the one I lost at Mayfield a few years ago.. Had a good hit, pulled it out of the pole holder and the way it was in my hand when it pulled again the pole flipped right out of my hand and was gone. Tried to snag it, but was pretty deep and never hooked it.
That was St Croix medium light with a Shimano baitcaster on it.

Three years ago I take my young grandson and dad to Cain lake. The kid leans his Spider Man pole up on the seat a fish hits it and over the side it goes.

Kids upset, but my son in law had another Spider Man pole in the truck.

Next day bring my son,and son in law fishing same lake.

We joke with folks at the dock if they catch a Spider-Man pole it's ours. Everyone laughs.

Two hours later my son gets a bite and starts pulling it in, something is wrong he says.
Out pops his hook with a line through it.
He pulls the line and there is a nice trout on it, he keeps pulling and out comes the Spider-Man pole.

We call my 10 year old grandson and tell him.

He says " Who's fish is it".  :chuckle: :chuckle:

I caught a bunch of crappie that all had hooks in them. I figured mostly cause people didn't know how to fish in the reeds. Mostly just freed fish since they were so small.

This one is a little different.
We were up at Pine lake fishing from the dock when I was about 10. Back when you drove on a dirt road from Sammamish pkwy up to the lake, LOL
This kid using a hand line, drops his line through a hole in the dock about two inches in diameter. He hooks a huge rainbow! We could see the fish well over 5 pounds. This thing is yanking this 6 year old kids hand into the dock over and over. His dad is yelling at him to let go, there is no way this fish is going to fit through the 2 inch hole. This kid is screaming but will not lat go of he hand line. All us other kids on the dock were ready to jump in with a net to try and get the fish.
His dad first tried to break the line with has teeth and cut hi lips all up, someone handed him a knife and he cut the line, LOL.

Slightly different twist.... Was fishing sockeye from shore, I caught a very nice fillet. They have cleaning stations along the shoreline with stainless chutes to let the guts go back in the water. I guess one got away...lol
