Thermometors??

I have a Polder a RediCheck and the built in temp gauge of my master built smoker. I get 3 different readings of  smoker temp by up to 20 degrees. How do you find one you trust?  When I'm
Doing a shoulder for pulled pork it's not a big deal. But trying to do some
Snack/pepper sticks. I'm a little uneasy
What monitors do you all use?

Any steady thermometer works, as long as it's steady, even if not accurate.

Boil test them.  Boil a pot of water.  Water boils at 212 degrees and will not rise above that temp because, well, it can't.  Boil a pot of water and while it's boiling, insert your thermometer.  Whatever the reading, you'll know whether or not it's dead nuts on, over a degree or two or under a degree or two.  Or 20 degrees in your case

Point being, with boiling water, you can't help but know what your thermometer is reading

Just make sure the thermometer is not touching the pot or it will read the pot temp.  It has to touch water only

If you want to get nerdy, every 500 feet above sea level water boils one degree less. At 2000' it will boil at 208. I realize I've left myself open to another nerd with a more precise calculation.

If you put your thermometer in ice water it should read 32 degrees. I don't think that changes with altitude, I could be wrong though.

You're taxing my abilities Lucky. I just managed to do the boiling thing. Haha

Well, that was unexpected.  I guess if it works though, that's even better than trying to remember how far off they are each time you use them
