Kahlotus late Muzzleloader hunt!
« on: October 31, 2017, 09:13:21 PM »
Been looking this area over for a while  as a last effort if i haven't filled my multi-tag which I haven't. Plan on doing a scouting trip over the next few weeks. Found feel free to hunt areas and other small areas of public land to explore. Just wondering what everyone else's intake is on this hunt . Any info would be greatly appreciated. If it doesn't look promising then late archery it is. PM's welcome. Thanks

The deer herd is definitely down in that unit. They get hit hard with archery, rifle, and late muzzy. I think there is to much doe harvest between archery, late muzzy, antlerless tags, 2nd deer tags, and damage tags. If they cut back on that the unit would be great again in a few years time. With that said, there are still some good bucks in the unit but usually locked away on private land.

2015 the area had a low fawn count and after this last winter the unit numbers are down. Knew of guys that hunted it rifle season that didn't see a legal buck. The biologist said they're talking about making the late muzzleload season draw for shooting doe.

Deer numbers are definitely down this year and has been for a couple years. Last year seen quite a few large 2pts. We had 3 doe tags during general firearm season. Out 6 of use 1-4pt and 1-doe was shot. the 4pt had some fat but the doe had no fat on her all. If the winter we had last year is the same this year the deer herd is going to be in trouble. Last year they had cougar sighting in the area. Wouldn't surprise me if the wolves will move in too.

I'm confident I saw one during late muzzy last year.

If your happy with a doe shoot me a pm, I can give you some tips. Deer numbers are way down though. Im not gonna bother hunting it this year.

Pretty much what was said above. I’ve hunted that area the last 5 years (private land) and this year was slow.

If you're looking for a spot to hunt is focus on palouse unit and way up north in the units that are open up there.

I have one of the rut rifle tags for the unit. From what my friend (landowner) has told me, the deer have been scarce. He didn't even hunt his property this year and another really good friend of mine only had 4 deer killed during rifle season on their property.

I think I'm chasing a white tail buck that was spotted last night. My tag opened on Tuesday, but due to family/baby stuff, I'm hunting tomorrow through Monday. I'm not picky, even though this is a "quality" tag.

If you can get out and scout, I'd strongly suggest it.

Even growing up in the area and knowing a TON of people in the unit, I had a difficult time getting permission on any land that wasn't Hunt by Written Permission or very close friends. Most farmers already gave out their "allotment" of permission slips.

I'll update my post on the deer thread after this weekend.

Good luck!
Wishing I was fishing...or in Wyoming

Used to be a great hunt. Fewer anfewr deer every year and more and more people. I don't participate in this hunt any longer.

I agree with teanawayslayer...used to hunt it every year but just not as good as it used to be. Grew up hunting that unit when it was equatzel...used to be a really great unit. There are still nice bucks there but nothing like it used to be.
