Cougar Killed In Idaho by Wolves
« on: March 08, 2009, 02:18:41 PM »

The F&G officers stopped by today to tell me about the cougar autopsy.  The wolves had mauled it on the back, rump, and they believe the kill bite was on the windpipe-neck area.  The stomach ripping was after it was down.

We were watching the Wolf Pack (8 black wolves) today through a spotting scope.  They were about a mile away on top of a ridge between Fairway Rd. & Elkhorn.

This was just a 1/4 mile out of the City Limits out Parker.  There was a cow elk carcass about 50 yds. uphill that probably attracted both the wolves and the cat to the area.  it is not officially confirmed yet but looked to F&G as if the wolves had killed the cat.  This was the same cat that was on Lon Stickney's porch at NY's and F&G took to Little Wood Reservoir and turned loose.

This was forwarded from a buddy back home

Cam,

Here are pictures of the cougar that was apparently killed this morning in Parker Gulch. It was reported to me around 9 am. I took these pictures after my meeting at City Hall. It is in the first little draw to the left after the end of the cul de sac on Parker Gulch Road just below an elk caucus.

I have been hearing about this sort of thing for a while now. I guess a hound hunter up around moscow area has been saying that he hasnt seen much cougar sign all winter and he was saying that the wolves were killing them. I think a pack of wolves can kill anything.

You think right!
Wolves do not like competition for food and will kill bears, cougars, yotes and other wolves.

If five good hounds can kill a cat, (saw it), and a wolf can kill a hound....then I would imagine that a pack of wolves would definately kill a cougar.

Good point...

I believe we solved the cougar problem because I haven't been seeing any cat sign this winter.  Then again, haven't seen much for them to eat either.  I remember finding a huge buck track on no tellum mountain.  It was after listening to three wolves howling up on the ridge.  I got up to the area, found the huge buck track then found a cat following him and then three wolves following the cat and me following the three wolves.  I got into the worst spot ever following those suckers.  After a couple miles of tracking, the cat steered away from following the cat and guess which one the wolves followed..yep, the cat.

So.... we can solve our cat problem here in the blues by importing a few packs of wolves from Montana/Idaho...? :chuckle:

I saw this show, it happened in wyoming and this yote along with his partner lived in harmony with a pack of wolves. Then this pack took over this drainage and wanted to prove a point to this little ole yote. Point made. They ended up getting parvo and started dying and then they got there asses kicked. They are very interesting animals, and no they dont like competition at all.

I was actually rooting for the yote in the video.
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.
