BALTIMORE -- A Maryland waterfowl hunter was flown to the hospital Thursday after he was struck unconscious by a duck he had just shot out of the sky, authorities say, CBS Baltimore reports. Robert Meilhammer, 51, was hunting with others in Easton near the Miles River shortly before 5 p.m. when the dead goose fell from the sky.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police said the hunter was sent to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he was treated for head and facial injuries. Meilhammer has been listed in stable condition, officials said.
Officials drove Meilhammer to Easton Airport via ambulance out of an abundance of caution. He was then airlifted to the trauma center.
Maryland Natural Resources Police, Talbot County Sheriff's Office deputies and local EMS responded to the scene.

I caught a mallard a few years ago that I had just shot. Thought that was pretty cool.

I took a glancing blow from a mallard I shot overhead on my left side. I wasn't able to fully move out of the way and just tried to lean out of the way. It hit me on my back shoulder and hip...it really hurt!

Cousin cracked a rib by a falling duck. Big group came in, few guys shot and one of the hit birds went directly into the blind. Cousin was watching a bird he hit and didn't see it coming.

Got hit with a wigeon a few years back when we had a flock overhead and had a goose hit me in the chest in a layout blind years back. Also had to dodge a few in years past. Seems to happen more when in larger groups as you may not see what someone else is shooting at.

Not directly, but I've had plenty hit my layout blind. They'll put a bend in the frame.

A friend's brother was bass fishing in a Ranger boat on Cassaick Lake in CA during the middle of the night. Full throttle across the lake, he stopped a goose with his face. Luckily, there was another boater wondering why this Ranger was going around in circles. He didn't wake up for a couple of weeks and spent months in the hospital - facial reconstruction, neck and head all pinned up with a halo on. Never remembered a thing. Guy was a mess and almost died.
Personally, I've had one snow come close to me after shooting it but no contact.

"Ducked" at the last minute to avoid head on encounter with a dead dropping 9lb honker. Goose hit gun barrel, barrel slammed in my shoulder, gun went flying, I was flattened to the ground with head hitting frozen ground. Right next to me was the dead goose. Bruised shoulder and head hurt but aight.
Never forget it.

Had a very close call a long time ago while pass shooting geese. I crumpled one with my first shot as they approached and kept swinging on the others as they passed over head. On my third shot I was now facing away from where the geese had approached from. Just after I hit another goose with that third shot, the first goose grazed my head and shoulder right before it slammed into the ground. At the time, being young and ignorant, I kind of laughed it off; but now when I think about it, I realize how scary of a situation it was.

Nasty, 737 I presume. Did you need to land early? Been whacked picking up 'dead' ones, no free falls

Been hit a few times by both. Mainly out of layout blinds. Had a duck give me a fat lip and bloody nose one time as I didn't have time to move after I shot it.
I also had a goose fall on my dog after I shot it. Heard a quick yip as it crashed into him.

A friend from Wyoming was hunting in ND in a blind with his dad. Late morning, dad was asleep and my buddy was daydreaming when he saw a tundra swan flying directly toward them. Swan permit in his pocket, he pulled up and shot, the swan crashed right into his sleeping dad. Fortunately just knocked the wind out of him and bruising, but my buddy thought he'd killed his dad.

I have had near misses in a layout blind but never took a solid hit.
My dentist claims to have had to reset a couple front teeth in a guy who took one directly in the kisser.

Never been hit by one but I did have one come down wing broke, hit a log and the wing bone sunk into the log a couple inches. Couldn't pole the bone out so had to snap it off. After seeing that I will never try to catch a bird falling from the sky. Imagine if it had been my hand....
